tphuang, planeman, Sczepan, or popeye; have any of you seen this article?

It has the most detail about the LPD design that I have seen, and claims that there are actually different classes, one an LPD and the other an LHD. I have my doubts about that last part...but here is what the article says:
...

Some very detailed specs here on the Type 071 LPD. Not much said about the LHD other than they believe they are building three of them.
damn'd, I ve never seen this article before, sounds very much detailed forthe 071 type and very informed ....
thx for that information !!!!

That is a very detailed article!

However I'm skeptical about the 24 x HQ-9 claim. CIWS guns and short-range SAMs, I can see, but large/heavy SAMs like the HQ-9? If the ship is supposed to be a transport, self-defense weapons, yes, but an air-defense ship? Seems a bit excessive.

Re: Type 071 LPD

I'd slam this report, as half of it is quite fantasy.....let alone just speculation.

I do not doubt the capability of this ship, and yes I also believe that there will be some kind of command centre onboard that ship,

but...it has several things wrong...and this makes the article sound more like someone's wet dream...

HQ-9 SAM? C'mon!

12.7mm MGs? Never really used on large PLAN ships, more like 14.5mm.

Can carry 800 troops? Fair enough....but 400 troops and A 50 TONNE MAIN BATTLE TANK? Just one MBT? Hahaha.

I agree that there are some points that do not make a lot of sense...but there is a lot of detail there not found anywhere else that does make sense. Some may be lost in translation...my guess is 400 troops will equal several tanks. The fact that it is 14.5mm versus 12.7mm is relatively minor. The long range SAMS are doubtful, but we will have to wait and see. It will be a large ship and capable of holding more missiles...we'll wait and see what types.

I agree that there are likely to be short range, self-defense missiles and that the vessel will be escorted by longer range shooters...but you never know. If you project a shortage of such escorts, or if you want the capital ship to really be capable of defending itself in a very hostile environment...you might just add the longer range missiles too.

Re: Type 071 LPD

Interesting point there, thanks.

I'm just not quite believing the article so far because its from an Indian non-governmental or official military source, and because we have not heard of anything so detailed from the US, Korean, Taiwanese or Hong Kong media, its just hard to swallow an Indian source.

HQ-9, possible, but that would add quite a bit of costs and extra equipments on the ship...a ship which is not so big either (150 m). If HQ-9 indeed, it would be quite an extraordinary feature, the most heavily armed LHD/LPD to date if true...it definitely has the space for it...but I mean such a system could be better saved for future 052C/D destroyers.

I will not discount it because it is Indian. Some of the points, particularly posted in October, have been shown here to be spot on. At 14,000 tons, it is a good sized vessel in addtion to its length, so, as you say, there is room.

Either way, in the coming months we will see how accurate this individual was or was not. I do believe the PLAN is building at least two, non-LST, large, amphibious vessels (LPDs at least), and that is a significant occurance in any case.

building LHD in Wuhan?? i seriously doubt this can be true, Wuhan yard hasn't built any large military vessels apart from subs.

Re: Type 071 LPD

Interesting article. I'd expect that such detailed specs must come from industry sources, even if only sales pitch. HQ-9 and phased arrays on an LPD??? But maybe those are on the LHD - that seems more credible in my mind. Remember that Invincioble class originally had Sea Dart which were area-air-defence in their time.

Re: Type 071 LPD

Well if they got dimensions and tonnage right this ships would be similar to Singapore Endurance class so I believe that they should provide similar level of capabilities...

I doubt that this ships will carry HQ-9 and phased arrays since they would take to much space needed for troops and equipment. Besides I really don't see any need for anything but basic self defense weaponry(type730 CIWS) on LPD. This ships will newer operate alone and should be well protected by fleet AAW assets...
