071 LPD thread

2018 was the year finally I hope to see LHA unfortunately same old story

LPD fleet is growing but totally useless as they are rarely used for true over the horizon amphibious assault

the LCAC after 10 years is still not conclusive the helicopters fleet is outdated and too small, those silly looking fishing boats sailing out of the well deck look look comical

LPD fleet is not utilised about 10 x Type 726 LCAC sat at JNCX collecting dust pretty much the whole year I mean do you really need to look further ?

overall amphibious capability's still remain a question, in contrast to carrier which is in full swing

7th LPD to be launched tomorrow

8th modules spotted

According to Cirr on PDF

WOW JUST WOW
Pretty amazing.

Will they stop at 8?

The US will have 12 San Antonio class LPDs...the 12th is now building.

Then they will use the same Hull to build 12 LSDs, which will be called the flight IIA version of the LPD and be the new LSDs.

The aft deck house is different, the stealth/ composite covering for the masts is gone, the hospital areas are helf as big on the LPD. The troop capacity is 500 troops instead of 700. It ca will carry two LCACs...or one LCU. But other than that, the basic hull is the same. The propulsion system is a little different.

Also, I do not think they are planning for the VLS that they are now planning to retrifit into the San Antonio. two 8 cell Mk-41s with the capacity to carry 16 Land Attack Tomahawk, or other missiles.

I expect the Chinese to stop LPD construction in favor of the helicopter carriers (LHD). Unless if for whatever reason the design for those is seriously delayed. In which case they will continue the LPD construction. I doubt they'll idle the construction dry docks.

I am curious, why cant China continue building both? The US have both LPDs and LHDs.

Well the fact is the current Chinese LPD order already exceeds their original requirements. Plus who else would you trust to build the LHDs? Both ship classes are projected to have similar displacement so I think it is natural to use the same proven naval construction facilities for both classes. Other countries like France use LHDs like the Mistral class to conduct amphibious operations. So in effect it is a multi-role vessel which also fullfills the same role as an LPD in their naval doctrine. The USA has a larger navy so they traditionally have had more specialized types of vessels than the French but this does not necessarily lead to increased capabilities. It just might shave construction costs. In the case of China given the lackluster state of their helicopter industry at the time of the introduction of the Type 071 LPD a Chinese LHD class back then made no sense. Things are changing however.

With regards to the LCAC boats perhaps China would be better off using more conventional types of landing craft.
