Larger point defense missiles for Type 056? The top image belongs to 502 Huangshi. Note the four larger covers/caps in the middle. The bottom image belongs to an earlier 056. Note all the caps have the same diameter.

The sources I see list HQ-10 missiles as weighing 20kg each which, if true, would put it in MANPAD class and an altogether lesser category than RAM at 75kg each. I'm reasonably confident that number is wrong, but it's the only one I can find.

If it is true that PLAN is going for a new frigate, significantly larger than 054A, that brings me back to my discussion a few years back, prompted by that "Sino-LCS" model that was floating around, that envisioned both such a heavy frigate, and also a future light frigate sized between 056 and 054, i.e. around 2500-3000 tons, succeeding 056 in production. Roles would basically be the same as 056 (i.e. focused on ASW) with greater speed and endurance, onboard helo, and 8-16 VLS cells for a quad-pack ESSM-type missile as well as ASROC and possible AShM.

HHQ-10 is Copy-RAM, right down to the two directional finding passive emission feelers on the head, with the main difference being in the fin design. For the two directional finders to work, the airframe needs to roll. It also has an IR seeker. There is a competing design that lost the competition and is chosen as the export item. Export warships get the second item. HHQ-10A might be a bigger version of the HHQ-10.

As for the PLAN trimaran frigate, it offers two helicopters which is the big advantage of using the trimaran layout by giving you a big butt to put the helo deck on. However, the disadvantage of the trimaran layout is to reduce the possible VLS you can put into the ship, with the PLAN trimaran concept idea having a set of 16 cell VLS (or is it 8?) There are two Front Dome illuminators on the ship, so its clearly using HQ-10, along with a previously unseen AESA radar (unseen except on weapon testing ships) on top of the deckhouse. Tonnage is similar to the 053H3 around 2,500 tons. If PLAN decides to finally accept this ship --- being on display in defense exhibits looking for export customer means initial concept has been rejected by the PLAN --- the configuration would differ.

Trimaran is one approach to a light frigate and possibly a good one, but certainly not the only one. I don't think two helos are required per se, but the additional space could be useful to support an unmanned system as a complement to a helo.

VLS count is not important per se, what matters is to get the right mix of capabilities in the form of a reasonable number of anti-ship and ASROC systems: combined 8 minimum, though 10 or 12 would be better. If it's easier to do that with slant launchers than VLS, so be it. Also an improved though still modest and affordable self-defence AA capability: 16-32 ESSM-class SAMs (so 4-8 cells) coupled with a single Type 1130 should suffice IMO.

The model trimaran has slant launchers in addition to VLS.

There is also plenty of deck space behind the VLS for a raised platform to house a 1130 or HQ10 launcher on top of mounting options on the hanger.

It would be ironic and hilarious if the PLAN did a Sino-LCS copy that turns out far superior to the original LCS.

We now have:

70+ Type-56 Light Frigates (Corvettes)
30+ Type-54 Frigates
12+ Type-53 Frigates

To my mind, that is enough Frigates.
Destroyers are more important now.

PLAN bulid 056 in order to replace more than 100 obsolete Type 037. And we are also decommissioning old version of 053.
