I don't think a 055 would be leading a green water SAG for ASW purposes. Most likely it will lead blue water SAGs if it wasn't in carrier escort duty.

Type 054As will lead green and brown water SAGs just fine. We have already seen many pictures to that effect.

YU-11 firing off from a Type 056A. Don't forget a 056A also has its own helicopter. It would most likely engage a submarine with its own assets before calling in for help. These ships also operate in packs of four, so they won't be alone. Type 056A or even Type 053H3 are sometimes seen in support or in lead.

Type 056(A) has a helipad but not a hangar. They can support helos based on land or bigger ships but don't have their own assigned.

Going way too OT now... but without the hangar, the presence of the helicopter on a long-term basis would compromise the radar stealth of the 56A. But it's not a big problem if opposing surface assets are not in the vicinity.

Type 056A is great for ASW at shallow waters and in SCS, but it is too small for deep ocean and its food, water and fuel is limited for long endurance patrol. Type 055's ASW suite should be used for deep ocean and long endurance missions like escorting an aircraft carrier.

Type 056A and type 055 (and other capital ships) each have their own advantage in different maritime regions.

I think ASW is overkill for a Type-055. Frigates and Corvettes would be fine.
There is no ABM requirement

I'd expect Type-055s to be part of SAGs with specific missions eg. a blocking position on the Northern approach from Japan to Taiwan
Such a SAG would include Frigates and Corvettes as an ASW screen
And there would be AWACs and fighters overhead

I meant serving as the air cover and command for ASW ships, not carrying out ASW itself.

I think everyone is too focused on what the "most likely" role of 055 would be rather than reviewing what FairAndUnbiased question was.

He described an 055 leading a multirole task force with air cover in the SCS.

That is absolutely a plausible role for 055, as the leader of a multirole surface action group operating in the SCS with friendly joint air support.

well, but 055 has the most powerful ASW ability so far

Not really

Frigates can use the same Bow Sonars, Towed Arrays, Variable Depth Sonars and ASW torpedo tubes
The Type-054 Frigate also has ASW rockets and VLS-launched ASW torpedoes
The biggest difference is that the Type-054 has 1 helicopter versus 2 for the Type-055

I think 055 has a much larger and more powerful bow sonar. Also, it can launch ASROCs from its VLS. But yes, 2 helos is better than 1.
