I am saying that naming convention has nothing to do with cities or regions having history. Shenzhen has zilch history, and in 1998, when the Type 0051B debuted as the most modern vessel of the PLAN, the name Shenzhen was even less so.

The names were being taken from old destroyer names that in turn were originally taken from cities. Nanchang was one of them, it was a Type 051 with the pennant 163, stationed in the South China Seas.

Well,in most cases you're right, not in this one(101 nanchang) though.
Nanchang is the site of August 1st uprising, the officially recognized founding of the PLA, so the name of the first 055 was chosen for some care.
In the case of Anshan, it's a small city alright, but the PLAN ANSHAN is one of the first proper destroyer PLAN operated(purchased from Soviet Union,a type 07 Gnevnyi class DD) ,so there is that.
PLAN name their ships strictly after the PLAN naming regulation(海军舰艇命名条例The naval ships naming code, roughly translated),but it doesn't mean PLAN don't name ships with historic consideration.

In the case of PLAN 112 HAERBIN and PLAN shenzhen, well, they are just not that important, the 055 was always the "objective ship" (目标舰)in PLAN's eye

...... Does this public reveal mark the first time, that China will eventually become the next country other than the US to have developed and field a ship-based missile capable of shooting down low-orbit satellites?
If this missile can shoot down low orbit satellites, does that also mean it can intercept SRBMs and IRBMs like the US' SM-3?
  1. The only significant capability of an anti-sat missile from its anti-aircraft counterpart is its guidance system. The rest are the same more or less, maybe the size. But looking at SM-3's size, 055's VLS is more than enough to hold such missile. Considering China has tested anti-sat missile long time ago, we can say that China has developed the capability long ago, nothing special about 055 relating to your question "the next to have developed".
  2. If your question is about "the next to field on a ship", then the answer is probably "yes".
  3. Once again, the key is guidance system not the rest of the missile. So if SM-3 can do and if China has done so long ago on land, the answer is "yes" to your last question.
  4. There is not much significance of launching such missile from ship than from land. All such missile does initial maneuvers once left the launcher, anti-satellite missile does not need harder work than its anti-aircraft counterpart.
  5. 055's significance (therefor the purpose of the revelation of this article) is that the ship is big enough to house VLS canisters that are big enough for such missiles.

I am still surprised the Chinese didn’t provide both gun and missile close in defence systems At either end of the ship. On a ship this size there is surely room to mouany both the Gatling gun and the RAM equivlane missile at both ends. Having 2 Gatling guns is rather important if the ship is subjected to saturation missile attack.

The USN's 16000t Zumwalt class doesn't even have CIWS.

Nor ammunition with their main guns. They said its just expensive to fire $800K per shell. There was some report, they discontinued already ordering ammunition.
Yeah, the AGS ended up fubar. However, they were not to have CIWS by design. Instead, they have a couple of anti-pirate guns.

IMO, the Type 055 is sufficiently protected with the pair of CIWS it has, plus the quad pack SRSAMs or MRSAMs.
