But can anyone explain, why the anyway bulbous bow sonar looks even more bulbous? It looks as if it extends almost further out of the deck.

Its opened in a way hinged to one side, so the sonar bulb may be installed. Its the main reason why this ship, which is being fitted, is on dry dock. The sonar is being fitted on. The sonar is not fitted during launch time.

So much more needs to be done. In fact, there are a lot of shortcomings - ASW, Submarine technology (Nuclear Propulsion, Stealth-Acoustics ), Naval Aircrafts, Helicopters etc. that limits China to being a regional Naval power. (tbh, none except USN is a comparison but I'm ready to accommodate the Japanese Navy as a competitor too)

Type 055 remains the major highlight (for the Surface Fleet) and deserves attention but that's about it. We need to expect Type-055 levels of upgradation to all hands of PLAN.

I still don't think we are giving enough attention to ASW capabilities (of type 055, if the thread is to be respected). How does type-055 Bow mounted sonar compare to the rest /best? Any Chinese papers available on that?

You're right. In particular, the ASW and nuclear submarine parts are still subpar and with a lot of gaps, partly also because of the secrecy around them.

But, here is the thing. PLAN's future is no longer something we can only find in a vision document or vision it in our imagination. It is literally taking shape in front of our eyes.

They already have refurbished/built two carriers. The third one, a completely indigenous 80k tons class flattop with EMALS, is under construction. The carrier-borne KJ-600 AWACS is under development; a stealth carrier fighter is to take the first flight in 2021. All the pieces for a modern carrier fleet are falling into place. No one seriously argues against that a nuclear-powered carrier will be forthcoming.

The pieces for ARGs are also taking shape, including 071 LPD, 075 LHD, 726 LCAC, navalized Z-10, Z-20, Z-18, Z-18L. They're not all in place or in the right quantities, but we've already seen them all in various stages.

The submarine portion is further behind, but we know they're coming even though they're shrouded in secrecy. We've seen the large-scale construction facility in Bohai shippyard. 095, 096, JL-3 are all under development.

The surface combatants are most visible: 054A/052D/055. Two Type-901 fast fleet supply ships are either in service or launched.

It'll probably take another decade or so before we see a complete and truly modern blue-water PLAN emerges. But we can already see the contours of the picture and there are no major barriers. Just a matter of time.

China does not have a operationally deployable LCAC, show me a Loaded Type 726 entering and leaving the well deck with full load

nor does it have the helicopters, show me one photo of a new Z18 doing VERTREP?

and its been 15 years

Honestly, I don't think bow sonars are too relevant these days.

VDS and Towed Arrays would appear to be much more effective.

Plus what really matters on the Type-55?
It's the AESA panels, Combat System, Datalinks and VLS

I suggest you create a dedicated PLAN LCAC & Helicopter Ranting thread, given the frequency and intensity that you whine about them these days. That way you get a dumping ground and the rest of us are spared with your tirade. It's a win-win. LOL.

Type 055 is China's best warship today. Will China use 055 technology in exchange for Russian submarine technology or Su-57 technology? Mutually beneficial
It's fair to say China still have things to learn about subs from Russia, they're still working on their new nuclear subs so we'll wait and see what they can do. But what make you think China needs Su-57's tech? It's not very stealthy (not even stealthy enough to require luneburg lens), not as good as J20 in supersonic maneuverability, and noticeably lacking in terms of avionics compare to other 5th gen fighters.

The biggest drawback to China's aviation industry is engines and they are catching up with the up coming ones. They're already ahead of Russia in terms of aerodynamic design and avionics. Russia did have a ton of experience, but their limit in buget is severely limiting their development. Su-57 is a great jet given what it costs, and I have no doubt Russia could make a better jet if they have the budget, but it is what it is.

J-20 is vastly superior to Su-57. Chinese subs are vastly superior to Yasen / Borei. Hell, Russia still don't have AIP which China has for years.

Russia also has many great technologies such as:

Mi-26, An-225, Mig-31, TOS-2A, T-14 tank, FOAB,

China needs these technologies.

This is getting very off topic.

The An-225 was built in what is now Ukraine...35 years ago. Once. the Mig-31 hasn't been built in 26 years. The Russians just about admitted the T-14 was too expensive and complex for them to use widely. The russians are having a devil of a time with their new jet engines for the Su-57.

I am utterly sure the Chinese, if they deem it necessary, can easily develop most of these technologies. China has, by and large, surpassed Russia in most ways technologically.

I'd take a Type 055 over the Russian cruisers any day of the week and twice on sundays.
