Isnt that normally installed before a ship is launched?
Since none of the other ships seem to go to the drydock after they've been launched?

No. They are not installed before launch, but after it. They all go to the drydock once again to have this done, but normally its not photographed because people don't pay attention to the drydocks nearby. This also occurs in Dalian where the drydock they use to do this is on the other side of bay. To catch a 055 having its sonar installed is a rare occasion, this is the second I have seen, the first one was on Dalian. Don't ask me for the picture because it is so long buried in this thread way back.

The relentless expansion of China's navy has been just astounding to observe. How many here would agree that China has the second most powerful navy in the world? Many Americans now think so lol.

Congratz to China and the Chinese people. Your hardwork has paid off.

So much more needs to be done. In fact, there are a lot of shortcomings - ASW, Submarine technology (Nuclear Propulsion, Stealth-Acoustics ), Naval Aircrafts, Helicopters etc. that limits China to being a regional Naval power. (tbh, none except USN is a comparison but I'm ready to accommodate the Japanese Navy as a competitor too)

Type 055 remains the major highlight (for the Surface Fleet) and deserves attention but that's about it. We need to expect Type-055 levels of upgradation to all hands of PLAN.

I still don't think we are giving enough attention to ASW capabilities (of type 055, if the thread is to be respected). How does type-055 Bow mounted sonar compare to the rest /best? Any Chinese papers available on that?
