This photo shows a Z8 with its tail folded onboard a type 071, it is very much shorter than a Ka-28. So a Type 055 should have no problem with any navy Z8/Z18F currently in service on CV 16 Liaoning.

Thus type 055 has no lack of choice of ASW helicopters, whether the helicopters are to be kept in hangar, or the flight deck.

Ka-28 sighted on Type 055 is part of type 055's familiarization training in with various type of helicopters with Z8, Z9, Ka-28/32, Z18, and Z20 in very near future.

Exactly. It's just part of training for a new ship. Like the USS Ford--despite being built for the future and expecting to operate mostly F-35s--had an F/A-18F be the first aircraft to land on her deck; an aircraft that will be phased out soon.

Asif is being unreasonable. Would he rather not have an Type-055 crew not be familiarized with every current helo craft in PLAN inventory? Last time checked. Ka-28 is still in service.

Are you sure superhornet is retired? You mean regular hornet?

I think what he meant is relative to F35C Super Hornet is an older model which would likely retired before the intended F35C.

Back to 055, I won’t be surprised to see small drones on the flight deck in the future. Does that mean China doesn’t care about conventional naval helicopters?

One thing we all agree on is that the whole indigenous Chinese helicopter industry is relatively behind compare to its ship building. Nobody is denying this fact. But, I for one wouldn’t mind to see China’s ship building is way ahead of its other industry. It has always been the case in recent Chinese history. Even Deng famously said in the 80s that “let few get rich first” despite China was officially a communist country at that time. If you can do it, you simply don’t wait for the others. That’s how rightly or wrongly China caught up and even surpass the west in certainly areas.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if China would go ahead with medium to large sized drone based naval helicopters earlier than the west. Just look at its quick adoption of cashless payment. The whole country barely got use to credit and debit cards, now it’s all cashless, even for the street beggars!

Fact is: even Z20 naval version is yet "cutting edge" (god knows what absolute definition that is), it won't be the first time China got platform+weapon combination development timeline conflict: anti-sub torpedo for 091 and 092, 2000km-range JL1 for 092 NEVER qualified for strategic deterence, ASM missile YJ(8) for Q5, VLS for 054 (first two), HHQ-61 missile for 053(K) frigates. Want me to continue?
The point is: NO need to discredit PLAN for any such case. Admit it that helo is part of "to be confirmed". That's all.

Huh don't know why I said phase out soon. The SuperHornet will fly for at least another decade or two complimenting the Lightning. But I will note the Navy plans to only order about 120 Super Hornets to replace legacy Hornets (18C and 18Ds).

After that no one knows if that's it for the F/A-18 lines. Boeing had planned to shut down production and then this order came in.

Back to topic though. I meant the Hornets--which will retire much early, maybe a decade or so--was the first craft being introduced to the new carrier because it was still in service for the Navy.

The mobile payments are commission free, and cost nothing if you already have a smart phone. And that is precisely the reason street beggars use it as well, it's free.
