There are discussions in Chinese media that 055 is big enough to host DF17 onboard. So, if 2 055 packed with DF17 as the lead of group of surface fleet, is that strong enough to take on a USN carrier group?
I accept that 055 will host some sort of AShBM, probably the rumoured YJ-21, but DF-17 seems to be pushing it. Plus DF-17 is not yet known to have an anti-ship version. Where exactly in Chinese media are you hearing this?

I doubt it is big enough to host DF-17 to begin with. What it can host might be something like this CM-401.

Or perhaps something like vertically launched CM-400.

I suspect CM-400 and CM-401 is the same missile with variants for different launch platforms with different fin configurations.

Here is couple of them

One Chinese military analyst said DF21D and DF26 are too big for 055 but DF17 is very possible.

I just curious 055 with DF17 with a group of surface fleet can go up against an USN carrier group?

But why risk your ship when you could be slinging DF-26B from way inside China?

This would make sense if PLAN's plan was to seek a "decisive battle" against USN in the middle of the pacific, but we're long way away from that sort of thing just yet.

Because you don't know when the fight might erupt. You carry the weapon with you for protection so you can go anywhere and respond quickly. Otherwise the surface ships may got wiped out before inland can launch the missiles.

DF-17 won't even fit a 055. DF-17 is over 11 meters long, longest VLS the 055 has is 9 meters.
Maybe a separate compartment. Or
The land based one has a huge booster whereas the one carried by H6N has no booster at all.

The ship version probably has a booster but shorter than the land based one.

People have drawn fan art of a 055A with giant VLS amid ship for DF-21D sized AShBM, however I don't think that's really worthwhile for a 055 upgrade.

In recent years there's been a "全能舰" or "All Energy Warship" concept been promoted by Admiral Ma "Anything can be launched electromagnetically if you have a big enough railgun" Weiming where a nuclear powered IEP warship has all of its weapon system relying on electrical power instead of stored chemical energy:
  • railgun main guns 10-200km range
  • laser CIWS 10km range
  • reloadable electromagnetic catapult launcher for missiles 200~600km range
  • electromagnetic catapault launcher for ASW torpedoes
  • anti-torpedo coilguns
The idea is that because nuclear power is so much more dense than chemical energy, by using nuclear power as much as possible one could fit more stuff into a ship hull.

With the electromagnetic missile catapult I think the idea is to boost a missile high up with the initial sling, to function as a replacement for first stage rocket. So a bit like the US Strategic Long Range Cannon idea. In such a system it may make sense to sling something like upper stages of DF-21D or DF-26B or even the DF-ZF.

There is no separate compartment, and given the same gravity works on ship vs. land, I doubt the booster will be shorter. There is also a question of the missile's diameter and the shape of the missile's head, which I doubt will fit into a VLS. Simply 055 cannot launch DF-17. Maybe a submarine, but not 055. For 055 to launch an ASBM, the missile will have to be smaller and tailored to fit that VLS.

The video said the ship born version has shorter distance than the land version, and hence shorter booster?
