Thats probably it. The older 054 which were undergoing midlife refits may have been upgraded to 054a.

The trouble with the 054 theory, is yes they are being modified, and maybe to a 054A standard, but saying these are the new 054A's is ridiculous. I mean wouldn't these vessels still retain their original pennant number and ship name, and not be given a new name when re-entering service. Sorry, 30 054A's were constructed for the PLAN, and at the time the 30th 054A was commissioned, there were no other 054A's under construction.

It is 32 period ! It iwill be equally ridiculous to add extra designation for just 2 ships What are you going to call it type 54++?

Its possible that the PLAN may of ordered 2 extra 054A's, but until now no one has seen evidence of this. But you claim a new Frigate has been inducted into service, yet I see no evidence of this from anywhere else, that's all i'am saying...

Chinese internet circulation said this could be the first ship of a new batch of type 054A on top of the original planned 30 ships. May be it is a response to increasing tension on the West Pacific. Just wait and see.
If the above is true, I would expect some upgrade on this new batch. A stop gap before 054B or type 057 appear.

The current news does seem to suggest these are a batch of new order 054As beyond the original 30 054As.
It is possible to me that these extra 054As may lead directly into 054B/057 production, in the same way that the batch of 4 052Cs led directly into 052Ds.
It may of course be a reflection of the geopolitical climate as well, but I don't think an order of some additional 054As is going to change things very much, so I would also keep an ear out for any significant orders of additional destroyers and observe for SSKs as well as aircraft and so on.
