The important commonality ships 120, 131 and 161 have, not because they belong to the improved second batch, is that they are going into "old man" destroyer squadrons, in a program to modernize and upgrade these fleets. These destroyers would therefore be the training seed used to migrate and train the personnel in handling and maintaining these new ships. These groups are expected to get more newer ships, certainly the 052DL.

120 ---> 10th Destroyer Division, previously nothing but Ludas to call for destroyers. The Ludas have since been retired. I'm not sure but 119 might have gone to this fleet also. From Luda straight to 052D is a big jump.

161 ---> 2nd Destroyer Division. This is the division that has the 167 Shenzhen which is the 051B, the two 052B 168 Guangzhou and 169 Wuhan, and Ludas that should have been retired long ago like 165 Zhanjiang and 166 Zhuhai.

131 ---> 3rd Destroyer Division. This is the division that is best known for its Sovremennys, 136, 137, 138 and 139, the former two are refitted, the latter two still operating.

So watching their activities can tell you that these divisions are starting to get their stride with the new ships. 120 had a replenishment exercise with a Type 901 and the 101 Nanchang. 161 led an expedition deep into the Pacific past the data line, which will surely ruffle American feathers, and 131 has its first deep blue deployment in Gulf of Aden escort mission. It is interesting to note that the Sovremenny never went into these escort missions, so its a first for this division to undertake such an expedition in the destroyer level.

Going to add to this.

121 Qiqihar and 122 Tangshan are both going to the 10th. 121 is a second batch ship, while 122 is a third batch and extended ship.

132 Suzhou is going to the Sovremenny division, which is the 3rd. It will be the second 052D after 131 Taiyuan. Suzhou is so appropriately named for a ship of this division stationed in the East China Sea, being named after a city in East China, which is true of most of the ships in that division, Hanzhou, Taizhou, Fuzhou and Ningbo. Taiyuan is a bit further inland.
