Type 052C/052D Class Destroyers

It kind of looks to me that the target drones are fired off from a large auxiliary deep ocean tugboat.

I think they were fired off a PLAN warship. The deck markings are different from the tugboat's landing pad. Also note the circular metal grate (for a helicopter to secure itself onto), which the tugboat lacks.

Isn't the HHQ-9 canister cylindrical?

It's only cylindrical for Type 52C, where the canister a navalised version of the HQ-9 (land). You can see it being loaded in the B-203 style drum launcher.

But then when you look at the Type 52D, you can see it has a much more squared shape.

I guess it's easier and more optimal when developing a new canister to make it square shaped. If the PLAN intends to develop new missiles for this class, they're probably gonna take this canister as a baseline.

Cool. After 117 Xining, this confirms that 119 Guiyang uses the floatation device decoys, or have those retrofitted. Not all 052Ds have them, these are first spotted on 117.

I am not referring to the decoy that was just launched. I am referring to the two large tubes at the bottom of the picture.
