Type 052C/052D Class Destroyers

Two designs based on different doctrines of conception.
The Atago is mainly a anti-air vessel. It carries a lot of mk-41 cells thanks to their medium size. It's not a problem as anti-air missiles mainly evolve through new stages, adding length and not diameter. As such a single hull can carry as many anti-air missiles as possible.

In comparison a Type 52D carries much bigger cells and as such more capable missiles (recently we had first real images of the ship-based YJ-18 and it's gigantic in diameter~650mm at least). HHQ-9 and CY-1/5 are also quite big. These missiles can't hold in an Mk-41 cell like the one found on the Atago. Bigger cells, but it means less by Sq meters so less cells in overall. One would defines it as a multirole vessel.

In term of electronics they're very similar imo.
I'm fairly certain a CY-1 could fit inside a 650x650mm Mk-41 cell, since it looks to be very much in the same class as VLA. I think even an S-300 could also fit into a Mk 41 given that its wings fold, so its total dimensions will not be much greater than its diameter of 500mm. Which means that HHQ-9 could fit for sure since it's smaller than an S-300.

A Mk-41 VLS cell has a 635mm (25 inches) VLS cell but that's the outer diameter. It's inter diameter is "only" 558mm (22 inches). Type-52D has a diameter of 85mm but I don't know for sure if it's outer or inner.

HQ-9 is quite large. AFAIK the first stage has a diameter of 700 mm and the 2nd stage 560 mm. In this image you can see that the missile slightly enlarges itself as it goes toward the engine (or maybe it's just my eyes..). But if someone has more reliable data I'm for it.

Nice, and this baby would be an equivalent of Japanese Atago or Kongo class ?

I think Atago may be more capable than 052D in many aspects
No, these are supposed to work like Akizuki class, as a smaller tag on to fleet destroyers that can provide a 2nd powerful radar and an extra set of armaments depending on mission.

Type 052D DDG 131 Taiyuan is heading for Japan.

Chinese destroyer sets sail for Japan for multinational fleet review

  • Taiyuan Type 052D will join vessels from the United States, Australia and India for international event in Sagami Bay
  • PLA Navy has never before taken part in a review organised by Japan, but while there will host a reception to ‘deepen communication with the navies of other countries and improve mutual understanding’

Where did you get those dimensions from? A link please.

Every graphic I've seen shows the HQ-9 smaller than the S-300. Also, HQ-9 has no stages, so you must be thinking of a different missile entirely.

Like I said, let's see a link to those dimensions you quoted.

This is for the VLS. Now you can find the type 052D diameter on sinodefenceforum, with the chart joined to it.

The numbers of HQ-9 come from this forum too. But maybe it was the data for the 5V55 and not the HQ-9.

Actually HQ-9 has a diameter of 0.47m.

Just regarding the diameter of the 052D's VLS, the document wording said that the VLS "canister/tube" diameter cannot exceed 850mm, suggesting the VLS cell itself has a maximum diameter of 850mm.

It was very old info which suggested the HHQ-9 had multiple stages and that it was a larger missile than S-300; as far back as the mid 2000s. But that is obsolete info, as the chart that Iron Man posted which we received quite a few years ago was decisive in confirming its actual size and configuration.

This is from the official Twitter account of the @IJS_MIKASA. You need to catch up in your naval history if you don't know what ship this is.

This is the first time a 052D visited Japan, and there is currently a ton of photos of Taiyuan in Japanese social media.

The Chinese Navy 052D type missile destroyer "Tahara" came to Yokosuka today. It was a whitish color that stood out in the distance.
