tracking marine units

hey guys, i thought you guys could fill me in on how do navies find enemy naval units. ships use sonar, so do submarines but if they both use passive sonar how does one find the other. how do they find submarines if they are on passive sonar. if they can find the submarine with sonar how come submarines have been able to shadow other submarines without being detected by others. e,g, in the Kursk diasater a American submarine was able to shadow the Kursk. how come the Kursk could not detect the American submarine. also are there blind spots in sonar like the rear of the vessel. i have seen a submarine been able to take photographs of a ships propellers without the ship knowing. so fill me in on this please. sorry if i lack knowledge.

Sonar does not have to be on on the ship you are tracking. Sonar relies on sound. Acoustic signature. Every sub has a acoustic signature. Which is aquired by the various noises the machinery on subs make.

Reguarding the Kursk..do you mean how come they could not detect the sub that was tracking them??? A LA class sub is extremely quiet. The only kind of sub that is quieter is an SSK.

If your sonar is "looking" behind your own submarine, you will most likely only catch the sound of your own propellers. Right?
