You didn't answer why the rule only applies in the Ukrainian war thread.

Also, if senior moderators can't follow the rules, how can you expect regular posters to?
I thought it was common knowledge by now that not all threads are created equal. The science and economics thread will obviously not be as strict as the ukraine thread whereas those such as the breaking news thread would normally be depended on the situation and context of the time and events. I honestly prefer this more context-based style of rules than something that is overly strict and so from this perspective I can see why the ukraine thread was shut down for a bit.

This happened with the indian-China clash and I expect it to happen in the future taiwan AR threads as well.

Regular(non mod) users don't witness the effort that the mods have to exert to keep the War in Ukraine thread from into devolving into a dumpster fire of personal attacks, escalations and inflammatory content. We literally clean up a dozen or more posts each day to keep the thread on topic and as a useful non-bias resource for everyone:

The Ukraine thread is IMO usually a dumpster fire and then magically 10-15 minutes later the mods have to come in and clean it up.

I am personally ok with the thread's posting requirements (ie. No politics). If there are important political development for the Ukraine War then you can put those in the politics section. Now if its news that directly impacts the war then I think they should be posted in the Ukraine War thread (example: the developments about the West providing Ukraine with tanks and the discussion about the West maybe providing fighter jets)

The thread was locked for a week, hopefully the mods will come with a stricter set of post quality requirements so that the thread can operate by its own without needing the mods to moderate it 24/7

The rule also applies in other threads and categories, especially the military thread categories.

It is generally the exception whereby a degree of political-tangent posts are allowed, in the non-military threads, or in exceptional topics that have very close proximity to this forum's user base (such as the Hong Kong 2019 thread).

Given Ukraine is an active conflict that is actively ongoing in a violent manner, emotionally and politically charged in the real world and online, and of debatable direct relevance to this forum, yes, the leash will be kept tight on that thread.
The Ukraine war thread is moderated to a much higher degree than any other thread in the past in my memory, you can't deny that.

The Hong Kong thread wasn't a military topic though. A better comparison would be the Ladakh thread. It sometimes delved into non military points, occasionally a few mean things were said about our Indian friends delusions but overall it worked pretty well.

Eventually the conflict ended, the leaks dried up and it became a mudslinging thread which didn't add anything to the discussion about Ladakh and it was appropriately closed.

Why can't the same rules be applied to the Ukraine war thread?

Most moderators seem to either be impartial on the war or don't like their biases get in the way. The two who most vocally partisan were Deino and SampanViking. As Sampan is currently AWOL it seems Deino has had his beer hall moment.
I have yet to see any posts from moderators in that thread which are not a result of others posting casting the first stone in an exchange.
I would have quoted the posts, but I can't as the thread is locked. On a number of occasions Deino posted a political post in the thread then deleted it when called out on it. Did he warn himself after doing that?

I don't have problem with any of the posts he made (other than them being wrong), I do find it hypocritical that people are banned for making the sort of posts he makes.

Let's make one thing clear. Deino is far from the only mod that has a problem with that thread. Pretty much every mod has a problem with that thread. There is a reason I never post there.

I have no issue with anything @Deino has posted on that thread. Frankly, I am a little disturbed that you are giving this little respect to a moderator that has served this role for so many years.

If you enjoy SDF, and if you want to continue to enjoy SDF, you need to respect the mods and the hard work they do, regardless of how you feel about their decisions.

Being a mod is a thankless and payless job, and their presence here is what makes SDF different from all the other forums out there.

I think we all need to appreciate this fact.

To echo Tphuang, I have not seen anything that Deino has written on that thread which was not a result of others throwing the first stone.
Given some of the past disgusting rhetoric that has been thrown towards Deino in that thread, it is strange you would make such a claim towards him.

That said, if you want to keep pushing this issue that is up to you -- the likely outcome is that the Ukraine thread topic will simply be blocked from this forum.
Because I would remind everyone that this forum is primarily for PLA watching, and we want to enable and empower productive, constructive PLA commentary and people who can provide it.
Other topics can exist on the forum, even if they have a slight political angle to them, if they don't become too virulent and/or if they are exceptionally close to home for the general userbase.

The allowance of the Ukraine war topic on this forum is a privilege, not an entitlement, and if becomes too troublesome, then it'll simply be blocked.
