❗️ Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions Escalate ❗️
Latest Updates as of July 24 Morning:

On the early hours of July 24, armed clashes erupted along the Thailand-Cambodia border. In addition to ground skirmishes, the Royal Thai Air Force deployed F-16 fighter jets, conducting two airstrikes on Cambodian military positions. Cambodia retaliated by firing "Grad" (Hail) rocket artillery systems at Thai bases.

Causes of the Conflict:

Core Dispute: Long-standing sovereignty tensions over border temple complexes, last flaring up in 2011. Since May 2025, border tensions have escalated, culminating in renewed clashes.

Immediate Trigger: Two recent incidents where Thai patrols triggered landmines. Thailand accuses Cambodia of illegally laying mines in violation of international law.

Diplomatic Fallout:

  • Cambodia’s ambassador to Bangkok expelled
  • Thailand’s diplomatic staff in Phnom Penh recalled
  • Bilateral relations at lowest point in years

Key Developments:

Both sides accuse the other of initiating hostilities, with no consensus on who fired first. Thailand has closed border checkpoints and taken preparatory measures, signaling further escalation.

Historical Context: Thailand-Cambodia border clashes have never escalated into full-scale war, typically limited to brief firefights and standoffs. Analysts suggest elites on both sides often leverage such tensions for domestic political gains.

Outlook: Duration of this escalation remains uncertain.

The border military conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated again. Several military clashes have occurred on the border. Thai authorities claim that the Cambodian military deployed a reconnaissance drone near one of the border temples. After that, the Cambodian army launched a missile strike from the Grad MLRS on a car park in one of the border provinces of Thailand. In response, Thailand attacked Cambodian military facilities with F-16 fighters. It is worth noting that the dispute over territory between the countries has been going on for more than a hundred years.

Personal opinion as a Vietnamese, Thailand has already prepare for this engagement and may be actively seeking it. In july, both Thailand's C-in-C and naval C-in-C visits Vietnam, signals a relationship between Vietnam and Thailand (and maybe even an agreement from Vietnam for this). Traditionally, Vietnam has always strongly support Cambodia, but things are not looking that way this time.

Cambodia opened up a naval base for the Chinese Navy and the Chinese are building a canal there. Thus Cambodia is swinging back to Chinese influence. Of course Vietnam won't help.
Absolutely Vietnam doesn't like this and Vietnam's attitude towards Cambodia is worsen. We need to see both side's actions and also Vietnam, China and ASEAN attitudes also. In 2008, a similar case happen yet it has not reach this level with Cambodia gets an upper hand due to Vietnamese support, now we shall wait and see.

News only - No useless speculation about Thai-Vietnam collusion. Just don't post.

Same for useless speculation about Chinese involvement unless there is exact news articles about it.

If your post is speculative and geopolitical in nature and not based on news, just don't post.
