Quick note on the Mirage-2000 RDM radar:

"The early 2000C had the RDM radar installed. The AdlA originally specified the Air Intercept optimised RDI but delays in it´s development led to the RDM being installed as a stopgap measure. This was most unfortunate. Not only was the RDM not the radar that the AdlA wanted, it was also underperforming by a considerable margin. The first 37 aircraft delivered to the AdlA were fitted with RDM. Later planes did then receive the definitive RDI radar."

The Mirage is built with a completly different scenario in mind, namely as a fast high-altitude interceptor and not a manuverable dogfighter. This means that the Mirage should try to stay out of dogfights at all costs and rely on medium- and long-range missiles to fight of incoming hostiles. If it can do this, then it is very deadly.

For Taiwan this is a problem, because if the Mirages retreat away from incoming raiders (Chinese Su-27) that would leave the island unprotected, which means that the Mirages need to meet any incoming attackers at a position far west, and when the enemy force close in, they can't retreat. The best thing would be to let the Mirages fight behind a screen of more manouverable fighters (like the F-16 or Ching-Kuo).

Most of the ROCAF Mirage-2000-5 display photos that I've seen shows the aircraft equipped for air defense patrols, with 3x fuel tank in centerline & inner wing stations, 2x R550 Magic II AAM's in outer wing stations, and 4x MICA AAM's in forward/rear fuselage stations:

The ROCAF is known to have purchased 60 Mirage-2000-5's with 960 MICA missiles and 480 R550 Magic II missiles, plus some centerline twin gun pods for the 12 two seaters that do not have internal gun.

The MBDA MICA missile has published range of >60km:

As far as I know there has been recorded kills for the R530 and R550, but not the MICA missile. Is anyone aware of any MICA combat kill records?

I have my doubts about the radar on su-30mkks, let's just leave it there. But yeah, the taiwanese mirage 2K are nowhere near one of the later variants, so I don't think their capabilities are really that high.

As for avionics, I read that the latest mirage-2k5 has the same avionics as the one on Rafael, that's pretty awesome stuff.

rdm radar=100 km. n001e=110 km
i dont think the mirage can hold as many missles as the mkk either.
why are we comparing it to mkk? the mkk is a grounds attack. we should be comparing to su-27, which has an even longer a2a radar, 240 km.

Sorry to interupt but India used the Su-30K not the MKI varient in this exericise. ..... I believe the missile it used was the R-77 AAM.
the paper wrote SU-30 K, the aircrafts was numbered SBO 10. -14. -16, -17, -18 (based in Bareilly/Dehli).
The missle in the exercises was first Magic-2 and R-73 (Shchel 3-UM helmet visier), later also MICA (french) and R-77 (India).

RDM vs. RDI vs. RDY vs. RDY-2 (!) radars:

According to the sources that I could find, French AF Mirage-2000-5 use RDY/RDY-2 radar, while early export versions were equipped with RDM radar:

By the late 1980s, the Mirage 2000 was beginning to age relative to the competition, and export sales slumped. Dassault began work on an update featuring Thomson-CSF multimode "Radar Doppler Multitarget" ("RDY" in its French acronym); a more powerful processor; improved defensive avionics; compatibility with the new Matra "Mica" AAM, which is available in both heat-seeking and active radar homing versions; and a new five-display "glass cockpit" layout borrowed from the Rafale program. The RDY radar provides true multitarget tracking and can guide four Micas to different targets simultaneously.

MIRAGE 2000E EXPORT VARIANTS

* "Mirage 2000E" was a blanket designation for a series of export variants of the Mirage 2000, each of which actually had a suffix that depended on the country ordering it. These aircraft were fitted with the RDM radar, as the RDI was judged too advanced for export, and were also fitted with other less sophisticated avionics.

Central to the upgraded multirole capability of the Dash 5 is the RDY radar developed by Thomson-CSF/Detexis. Development of the RDY radar began in 1984 and the programme proceeded smoothly. In July 1987 the first of nine prototypes took to the air in a Falcon 20, and seven years later in December 1994, Thomson-CSF were able to deliver the first production standard set.
RDY is the result of Thomson-CSF´s experience gained from producing four generations of fighter radar, in particular the RDI radar -the first Pulse Doppler radar developed by Thomson-CSF.

The RDY can select one of three PRF (Pulse Repetition Frequency) modes, namely low, medium and high when operating in the air intercept mode (Auto Waveform Management). Low PRF is employed in the Look - Up mode. High PRF is best suited to long range Look - Down, while Medium PRF is used at all altitudes due to it´s reliable target detection properties. Thomson - CSF have developed algorythms that continually optimise the wave form to guarantee the highest target discrimination, even when the enemy is using advanced ECM. RDY has proved it´s ability to accurately measure target range even in heavy ground clutter and consistently demonstrates a “False Alarm Rate” of zero. When operating in the air-to-ground mode, the RDY employs Doppler Beam Sharpening, terrain mapping and air-to-ground ranging. RDY can simultaneously detect 24 airborne targets, irrespective of their altitude, track the eight most threatening and auto-prioritise four of them.

Thomson-CSF/Detexis quote the look-up,look-down, shoot-up,shoot-down performance as being 70 km. In actual practice engagements conducted by the French AdlA, RDY has demonstrated it´s ability to detect, reliably, fighter size targets at 140 km.

Great effort has been made reduce the effectiveness of any ECM that the enemy might choose to employ. Of significance is the advanced signal processing and the Monopulse receiver with it´s three independent channels. The RDY is however being developed further. The latest version, RDY-2 has a 15% greater air-to-air range, a SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) mode that allows ground mapping with a resolution of less than one metre and refined moving ground target tracking.

"When the first Mirage 2000Cs went into service with EC 1/2 and EC2/2 at BA102 Dijon-Longvic, the radar RDI of the Mirage 2000 was not ready yet. So they were equipped with the RDM. This was an improved version of the Cyrano IV unit of the Mirage F1. I'm sure that you remember some French Mirage 2000Cs with a black radome. Meanwhile, the following Mirage 2000s were delivered with the RDI radar to other units. Today EC 1/2 and EC 2/2 are equipped with Mirage 2000-5F and are the only unit able to use the MATRA MICA active AAM. The radar RDI was never exported. The Mirage 2000s exported to Peru, India, Egypt and the UAE had the RDM unit."

===============

According to published specs, both the Thomson-CFS RDM ("Radar Doppler Multifunction") and the RDI ("Radar Doppler Interception") radars have operating range of 54 nm / 100 km / 62 miles.

the RDY radar is claimed to be able to detect aircraft sized target at 140km, while the RDY-2 radar is claimed to have detection range of 160km.

I have to think that if the French AF and the Indian AF had an air combat exercise, the French AF would send Mirage-2000-5F's equipped with RDI or RDY/RDY-2 radar, and not the older Mirage-2000C with RDM radar.

Does anyone know if the ROCAF Mirage-2000-5's are equipped with RDM or RDI radar? I've read the MICA missile require RDI or upgraded RDM radar to use.

that 240KM is about as bogus as 350KM for BARS. Seriously, it can probably detect a aerial tanker or a AWAC from that far out. The range used for forward and rear hemisphere is quite ordinary. I would guess even those numbers are probably vs 10 m^2 target. And if you look at it, it's not even capable of engaging multiple targets and it's not even slotted array radar. The mkk radar is considered to be better for A2A.
