What would be the aerodynamic justification for the groove (if it exists)?
Area ruling could be one depending of how much they can compensate on the top side for the wings. Cutting drag is a key for speed and range. History of the f-102 is a good example of that importance. F-102 was not able to go supersonic while with area ruling modifications, f-102a was a supersonic aircraft...

But its a thin slit. That’s not going to affect the cross sectional area much, because the cross section of the groove will essentially be a 1D line with no area. If it’s shallow then it also won’t help with yaw stability too much. Im still crossing my fingers that it’s not there. Im simultaneously coping and edging at once.

one thing i find curious so far is that the pitot tube alignment in these most recent images (particularly the side-on shot where the cockpit is revealed) do not seem perfectly centered on the nose. in fact it seems placed offset above the apex of the nosecone. this doesnt seem to quite match that earlier close-up shot of the pitot assembly attributed to the j-xds. could it be a trick of the light? ai enhancement artifact? a misreading of perspective? actual grounds for there to be two flying articles? perhaps one is manned and the other unmanned which would account for the difficulty spotting the canopy up until now?

The grooves could be very very shallow, so that they are only noticeable in certain light angles. Of course it could be two airplanes, and I'm reminded of the previous rumors of “teacups” and “teapots”
Wild if it's true (please be true).

I am also leaning more towards 2 different planes: teacup and teapot

The images have not been close (or clear) enough to clearly identify any aircraft numbering, but I'm surprise by how much footage the world is getting from this one and the J-36. Complete opposite from the J-20s and J-35s developments.

The number of images of J-36 is far below J20’s early days. J-50 photos are more than J35’s, but still no where close to J20 days.
