Russia Vs Georgia..a widening crisis!

There were not many surprises out of the SCO summit. The general language was pretty supportive of Russia, which is in keeping with the general situation, and the fact that it would be very out of character for China's leadership to really repudiate Russia on this issue. But we did see that China got it's points in: the remark about territorial integrity is the main one, and the part about "seeking restraint" which I think goes along with China's general belief in non-interference. Basically China supported Russia as long as it did not cost them anything.

Also on a side note it must really be terrible to have the summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan when they could have had it in some of the world's greatest cities?

Sounds like a light rebuke from the Chinese to the Russians over the issue. China has been pretty consistent on the sovereignty/internal affairs issue. By China's traditional standard and rhetoric, Georgia was fully within its rights to take whatever action it chose in a so called breakaway province and Russia has done exactly what China most vehemently opposes.

That being said, I don't think it is in China's best interests to totally abandon Russia, yet. The Russians still have stuff that the Chinese do want access to, and it is not worth jeopardizing the relationship too much.

I guess this is what we all suspected all along...

South Ossetia: Russia intends to absorb region

TSKHINVALI, Georgia (AP) — Officials in South Ossetia said Friday that Russia intends eventually to absorb the breakaway Georgian province.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the region's leader, Eduard Kokoity, discussed South Ossetia's future earlier this week in Moscow, South Ossetian parliamentary speaker Znaur Gassiyev said.

Russia will absorb South Ossetia "in several years" or earlier, a position that was "firmly stated by both leaders," Gassiyev said.

...

Gassiyev's deputy, Tarzan Kokoiti, said South Ossetia has the right to reunite with North Ossetia, which is part of Russia.

"We will live in one united Russian state," he said.

The Chinese are certainly not that naive. Regardless of what position China takes.... lets even suppose China totally condemns Russia and supports Georgia... the results would be 100% the same if there was a conflict between mainland China and Taiwan.

The same countries that would defend Taiwan had China supported Georgia would be the exact same countries that would defend Taiwan had China supported Russia. Why? Because rules matter very little, there are only interests.

Russia-Georgia conflict created a big headache for Israel which armed and trained Georgians for years - and now suddenly Russians threaten retaliation by supplying S-300 SAM batteries to Syria. Here is what a prominent Israeli analyst says:

Toltally Agree, the west is very much double standard about these 2 situations, Georgia and Taiwan, and the sad truth is they can get away from it too in public opinion issue, this is all about intrests and ppl want to hear want they like to hear, what's right and wrong is not as important for a average western citizen tbh, China should have gave russia some more support imo.

So where is Russia going to sell that oil? Russia is reliant on European markets for its income, just as many European states need Russian energy supplies - it would be at worst a temporary problem if it ever happened.

Well, I have a good suggestion inregards to where the oil should go. How about selling it to China? of course with less price that the european paid. any other suggestion?

Well, the problem here in the short term is, that nearly all russian pipelines are going westward. Currently there is just no meas available of transporting great amounts of oil to China. This would first require great investments and take several years. But of course it's a med-long term possibility.

I would suggest that a threat of "if you don't do what we want, we'll start building pipelines so we can send our oil and gas to China in the future" is not a very good one.
