MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Russia's president said Tuesday he has signed an order recognizing the independence of two Georgian breakaway provinces, a move likely to increase tensions with the West over the conflict in the region.

Now it's done, Russia has recognized SO and ABK, much faster than some have thought. Now is the question for many countries of how to react. As I already said, I don't think much more than (harsh) words will actually follow. Too many are too concerned with economy, stability and stuff. Maybe a few more symbolical decissions, but not much more.

^ Payback for Kosovo. Its ironic how nearly all of EU and US recognised Kosovo's illegal independence, violating all "international law" and Serbia's "territorial integrity" set by UN.
Now when Russia does it for ABK and SO, they use these same terms (which they threw out the window themselves when it came to Kosovo) against Russia.
I believe, hypocrites, is the term used to describe something like this.

Not to mention that too much discussion in such terms is strictly Political and should be avoided on this thread:D

There are other places for such discussions.

Thank you

Russian Warship Leaves Ukraine Port For Black Sea

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine (AFP)--A Russian warship active during the conflict with Georgia left the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Sevastopol Monday

The ship, equipped with P-500 Bazalt sea-based anti-ship missiles and an air defense system, had returned to port Saturday after leaving its base on the second day of Russian maneuvers in Georgia.

"The warship Moskva has left Sevastopol and is heading for an area controlled by (Russia's) Black Sea fleet for checks on its radio and technical equipment and its communications systems," a Russian Navy spokesman was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

"This voyage conforms to annual plans" of the cruiser's assignment, he added.

The cruiser's crew member, quoted by RIA Novosti under cover of anonymity, said that the warship was cruising the Black Sea's eastern parts, not far from Georgia.

Both Russian and Ukrainian navy officials refused to comment.

Hmm... it was said that the Moskva suffered battle damage in a duel with Georgian gunboats... although the Russians deny it.

I can't find the source any more, but I read a rather convincing article that the ship had a small fire, following a weapons system malfunction.

It is reported US coast guard cutter Dallas docked in Batumi, instead of Poti where it was originally headed, to avoid direct confrontation with Russia.
Can this be seen as US backing down? Or just the infrastructure damage at Poti is too extensive for that ship to dock and unload?

It was propaganda.....there are pictures of the Moskva entering Sevastopol with no sign of damage. The Georgian corvetes were engaged by the smaller Russian escorts

Before the Moskva entered Sevastopol again with no sign of damage, it spend some days in the russian navy port of Novorossiisk, AFAIK, to where it departed from off the georgian cost immediatly after the Georgian Navy attacked with FACs, wich were then counterengaged by russian escorts. There were reports, even from a sailor aboard one of those escorts, that state a small fire broke out on Moskva.
This incident is a case to study the protection, or lack thereof, of big (flag)ships in the littorals, esp. when an amphib landing is underway and procedures / tactics are perhaps not on top level. It'll also be interesting for some how effective the georgian streetfighter approach was / could have been.

I guess the main reason is that the US wants to give those goods directly to the Georgians themselves, and not via the Russians, wich are in Poti.
