Yes, If I can confirm that indeed 2 tank colums are moving to the east and west of Gori with the intent on either bypassing which would lead me to believe that they will move on tbilise with airborne troops landing south of tbilise the way the russians are bombing the southern roads.

I would love to see about 8 B-2 end this now by taking out that tunnel , ships and tank Div. This op was well planned and was going to happen. The russians are up to somthing, just want and how far I dont know. But, If it looks like a duck well......

Are Russian forces tryng to attract Georgian forces out of the Tskhinvali South Ossetian front?

Has Russia the technology to suppress Georgia air defences?
The terrain favours Georgian airdefence, don´t?

Why do people keep insisting even the remote possibility that the USA would intervene? If they want to keep the Russians on their side in dealing with Iran and N.Korean, then I guess Georgia will have to be sacrificed.

Another thing, this isn't Chechnya, where they were repressing a popular rebellion. They are going up against a standing and conventional army, an altogether different case. They even have local popular support as I'm sure you guys have heard, and have a legitimate cusus belli. Besides, I don't think Russia would altogether annex Georgia. As long as the regime is toppled, they win.

One point that had not been addressed is how much the leaders knew:

- Certainly the Russians were not expecting this, or else Putin wouldn't have gone to Beijing.

- Certainly the Americans were not expecting this, or else Bush wouldn't have gone to Beijing.

So it stands to reason that Georgia had been planning this for a while and timed it so that Putin would be away from Moscow.

Also, this is another example of a democracy making war against another democracy.

I expect U.S. intervention would be small-scale if it happens. The aim would be protecting the Georgian government. If Russia begins taking parts of Georgia outside the separatist republics then the U.S. intervention would probably be a deployment of troops in Tblisi. The U.S. would probably justify this as protecting its troops in the capital and evacuating citizens.

The U.S. is formulating plans to evacuate citizens and there will likely be an airlift of troops from Iraq. These two things together could be used to sneak in more American troops to protect Saakashvili from being overthrown.

The way people seem so dismissive is of Russian President Medvedev is stunning. I have noticed that there seems to be a distinct media campaign to denigrate the man and that many forummites seem to play along. Am I in a real minority who actually knows who this guy is?

To an extent I sympathize, but it seems that Putin is very much in control. He's just turned up in Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia to talk to Russian Paratroops. There seems to be little ambiguity as to who's in control. I feel sorry for the Chinese, who are such polite hosts; if it was necessary for Putin to return to Russia to deal with events on the ground, the situation must be very critical.

With what appears to be an armoured pincers movement developing towards Gori - cutting Georgia in half and taking the base of the Georgian 1st Infantry Brigade - ,the prospect of Russian intervention in the west of Georgia, and if Russian Airborne Forces and Spetsnaz/GRU troops are likewise poised to participate or support a prospective attack in the east on Tblisi itself, then clearly, it does appear that Russia may be prepared to land a killing blow. Putin's personal presence in North Ossetia cannot be a good sign for the Georgians.

With the Abkhazians now bombarding the Georgians (on the pretext of the Abkhazians having a "Friendship Treaty" with the South Ossetians) in the northern part of the Kodori Gorge, and Russian aircraft now bombing Georgian targets there as well, the Georgian position in the Kodori Gorge may soon become untenable, considering the Abkhazians are to their front, and the Russians are to their rear.

Edited to Add:

Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks have shut down the Internet in Georgia; neither the Government of Georgia website nor even the Georia Times newspaper can be brought up online. As an aside, apparently a DDoS attack originating in Belarus has also attacked

Hasn´t Russia Artillery also?

If Georgia has so many ATGW, how is it that Russia is still fighting on the ground?

There is no clear information about what is happening there? who is winning after all, in the ground fight?

Once again, where are you sourcing these from?

Two Russian aircraft have been confirmed as shot down:

An Su-25 and get this....a Tu-22M3 with two more damaged. The Georgians have SA-11s. This seems like a major escalation, the Russians are beginning to use their strategic assets now.

3 Backfires hit with one lost?

Would the Georgians have anything capable of bringing one down?
