That large-size helicopter landing pad relative to the size of the warship itself probably means that it can operate not just Z-9, but probably Z-20 as well. Though, until the warship can be seen from the rear, I don't think there will be a helicopter hangar onboard.
There is no other explanation for this boxy superstructure otherwise. It is a hangar, and a very big one at that.
So big in fact, that imho that smells of composite superstructure - though this is of course a guess.

The biggest (?)s right now are probably underwater hull shape, p/plant and speed - as indicators of role and displacement.
But my current guess(asi wrote in 056 thread) is probably sino-LCS: reasonably survivable, numerous, and fast surface combatant for stand-in missions in contested space.

I'm wondering about that.
We don't yet know its name, but it seems to be some sort of corvette or light frigate, though we also don't know if it's a one off experimental design.

What I may do, is simply rename this thread to "PLAN corvette/light frigate thread" so we can consolidate 056 news and any news of this new corvette because 056 is no longer a major topic of news anyway and we don't know if we will end up getting news of this new corvette for a long time or not.
Open to other people's thoughts.
Sounds like a good decision pending confirmation of whether this new ship is the lead ship of a big class.

I would very much like that space to be a hangar for an onboard helicopter. That was the major item holding 056 back from being a first-rate littoral ASW asset. But if the superstructure aft of the bridge does indeed house a hangar, it would appear to leave very little room for intake and exhaust trunking.

LCS was designed around minimal manning, replaceable mission modules and very high speed requirements. Unless there is evidence that this vessel is pursuing similar characteristics, the comparison seems more misleading than informative.

Closing this thread, and started a new thread all PLAN corvettes and light frigates, including 056, new designs, and surface combatants under 4000t displacement.
