Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Great pictures...............and what a surprise!...............i think we all expected the outfitting of the first 052D to be a little quicker than the current 052C's, as this was a new toy for the Chinese navy to try out.........but i was still expecting the 5th and 6th 052C's to enter service first.

Overall a pretty quick build time for such a complex vessel........when compared to the 6-7 years it took to build a Type 45 in the UK.

I'm really digging the look of the PJ-38 gun. At first I thought its geometry was a bit weird, specifically from certain rear angles, but these high res, multi angle photos makes me realize it really has a rugged, ugly (but stealthy) aesthetic to it, and its entire shape and the details from the ladders on the turret to the sheer length of the gun and the friggin muzzle brake, all give it an "oomph".

Not trying to be a killjoy..........but looking at the side profile of the 052D, particularly the hanger area, the steel panel fit doesn't look very good and is very inconsistent, even if you take into account the light. I handnt noticed this effect to such a degree on previous Chinese warships!

Actually the quality is similar to 052C and is relatively similar to that of other ships. Kunming today was just taken at a few unfavourable angles, fairly close up, with light shining the wrong way.

172 D1 has been commissioned today, very interesting it beat C5 and C6 (152 and 153)

now SSF has 2 x Type 052C and 1 x Type 052D thats 170,171 and 172

ESF is laughing all the way to the bank with 2 x Type 052C 150 and 151 with two more 152 and 153 ready to join soon

NSF well lets just leave that one

Yeah, I noticed that and it was annoying me as well. Its probably just superficial stuff that has no real impact on the performance of the ship, but the fit and finish of 172 doesn't seem to match the usual high quality we have come to expect of modern Chinese warships.

They did get these ships built awfully fast, I wonder if that was part of the reason.

Lighting and close up, my friend, lighting and close up.

I remember a pic of some 052Cs at JNCX taken a few months back very close up at about dusk, and you could see every weld like a scar. But at sea, with photos taken even at close-medium distance, the ship seems completely sleek. It is the same for all ships of virtually every nation.

Here is a view of the sejong. Sleek, well built ship, but you can also make out some weld lines. If the camera was closer and the lighting different, its welds would pop out too.

For virtually any ship one can choose, they all look quite jaggedy once you get in close. And ships at sea look thus far sleeker. Once we get photos of kunming at sea, we will be hard pressed to spot any of the welds at all.

Also, colour contrast.

Yes.........i understand about the lighting etc.........but some panels actually look like they are jutting out, ie out of alignment with neighbouring panels!

Just being picky......but it does look pretty bad.

Anyway, a very good day for the Chinese Navy. :)

And here are two photos that will make you feel like 052D looks like a patched up and welded after a vessel hit by a missile before vs real 'AEGIS class' destroyer:

Atago:

Can you see the difference?

I can see the Kunming's radar is much bigger, but you will have to need an eye test to not see the 'patched up' look on the Atago's paneling as well.

Just out of interest, do you ever get bored of trolling Chinese related threads? Seems a little unhealthy to spend some much time posting negative comments on a forum dedicated mainly to a nation and people you have so much obvious antipathy towards.
