It does seem like its been moved from its previous location though, doesnt it?
To me it seems like the same place as ever before; its clearly at the last pic in compare to the blue buildings, and you may see it at the first pic by comparing the red crane and Dalians Skyscrapers in the back; in the secound pic the tanker, leftsied of Varjag, seems to be in the drydock.

the small "wall" in front of the Varjag seems to be the pier, which you may see behind the varjag at the first posting (Jeff Head) in this thread, page 1;

The last pics (=I postet before) will be made by telephoto lens. This will contort the deep of these pix.
What I am seeing is, that same work could be done at the landing deck,
and the Varjag "smoking" - if I interprete this pic correct

What do you think this smoking came from? Some work inside?

some new postett pix

From the pictures you posted, I see that the back of varyag is lower than the bow which seems to me that there's an engine installed inside. The ship's position in the picture is similiar to as it was in Ukraine before the original engine was removed.

What do you guys think?:china:

Ditto, altough its realy hard to see it from this angle.

And the smoke seem to be coming from behind of the ship.

...Now in my opinion, there are 2 possibilities.

1. The PLA is going to install engine and weapons on the ship.
2. It is being converted into the initially proposed casino.
What do you guys think?:china:

Chinese investors pays $45m for carrier hull.
Varyag's Black Sea odyssey began on June 14, 2000. She moves in eternal circles in Black Sea, entered the bosporus in Nov. 2001 (!) and arrives in March 4, 2002.
This indeed was very expansive.

Since 2002 some work has been done at the hull, within 3 Yrs something could be done - and this was expansive to
- the work itself
- and the mooring longside the pier!

To buy civil passenger ships would be much cheaper - see

Which private investor will pay so much money to create a swimming casino??
No way, you can't make profits after investing so much money.

So definitely: PLABUDDYs secound alternative seems not to be very realsitic to me.

The scaffolding of the island has been removed! Position of the ship is the same as before. Smoke is from behind the ship I think.

check out this image of admiral kutznesov
p1b.jpg

she appears to be producing smoke out the same area as varyag.
perhaps some kind of engine is being tested on board the varyag, although it may not be enough to sail her away...yet.

now, the slight tilt to the rear must signify the engine(or another very heavy mass) is indeed in the back. it can be reasoned that the forward weapons of the kutznesov have not been installed.

now, where would china get engines? china could easily purchase large engines like those powering the VOYAGER cruise liner. then combine them with some shanxi diesels, which normally are liscence production franch or ukraianian engines. such a combinations(CODOG) would let the ship travel roughly 25-30 knots.

How many knots does Admiral K need to make to get planes off the deck with something approaching a suitable weapons load??

well, seacraft, i don't know if I misunderstood your question or not but... there's no necessary minimum speed, because it's the aircraft who need speed to take-off, not the carrier...

It depends on how much wind the area they are operating in has.

The USN does it like this..Generally the ship is directed into the wind and the ship gose or slows as necessary to get 30 knots accross the deck. That creates lift for the aircraft to takeoff. I explained this a long time ago in the old forum...

Fellows..as far as the "smoke" comming out of the Varyag. On the Varyag they could have been blowing what we called "stack gas"... That is getting rid of pressure built up in the exhaust stack because the engines is operating at a low volume. Such as in port. I am not saying that the Varyag has engines installed I'm just offering a possible answer. In case engines are installed (she has been in the ship yard for 3 years) They need lots of testing before going to sea. OMG! MIGLeader could be right!!! Honestly that smoke would indicate a main engine being tested. Auxillary engines have exhaust ports in the hull on USN CV's...Just a guess on my part in the case of the Varyag.

On that pic of the ADM "K" the ship just appears to be operating and is producing exhaust. That's all.
