I've no idea but I always thought that feature was definitely used for decades. It's fairly simple to implement yet it could mean a lot in a war.

Also, equipping slow torpedos to emit specific sound patterns should be fairly doable.

We don't know. It could be humiliating to the US, to the Chinese or to neither. They could be playing around, they could be doing some double bluffs and feeding incorrect information on purpose etc. Again it's impossible to know the true intentions. It's already impossible (for us) to know the actual event and its finer details.

But for a general situation of arbitrary submarine and surface anti-sub efforts, the submarine should NOT be continuing its usual stealthy operation under the surface while it knows that the adversary anti-sub efforts are trying to detect and track it. Why? It's simply because allowing them the time to calmly go about these anti-sub mission is giving them many golden opportunities to test things out and verify whether or not they work etc.

Now you can see where the mind games could come in and be in effect on both sides.

Reminds me of the Russian Kilos --- not Cold War, but Today Era, Syrian Campaign --- from the Northern and Baltic Sea Fleets, heading to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea to support Syrian operations. NATO tried to track the Kilos, and the Kilos played a cat and mouse game by going underwater, and then surfacing when attempts are made to track them underwater. They can climb up to the conning tower and say hello to the MPA as the planes flew overhead. They play this game right up to the Syrian coast, then launch Kaliber missiles at ISIS.

US side in denial. The Asian guy sailor from USN mustin posted on his Twitter about J15 landing on Liaoning and escort 055 and 052D. Twitter quickly closed his personal account. That guy probably got canned.

What he posted was in contradictory to the photo of commander putting his legs up and watching Liaoning as it sailing alone. It was to mock Liaoning

Irrelevant. I want to see higher quality photos / videos. This is assuming those were submarines to begin with. IF the allegations are true then we both know photographic / video evidence exists. The next question is, how does one show in a photo or video of a submarine being 'forced' to surface? As one here pointed out, the sub commander may have surfaced on purpose to show peaceful intent. Next, have there been any official press releases from either side about this?
