The latest image on the new large dry dock at Yulin naval base. It has been flooded and put to use. A Type 075 (Hainan?) is seen in in the dry dock. It also appears that the necessary cranes (orange colored) have been installed.

BEIJING, Dec. 5 -- With the assistance of two tugboats, the supply ship CNS Kekexilihu attached to the 42nd Chinese naval escort taskforce pulled off from the port of Djibouti after completing the in-port replenishment there on November 29, local time.
This is the first time that the taskforce has implemented in-port replenishment of materials since setting sail on September 21. The taskforce replenished materials and fuel as planned, which will provide a reliable guarantee for the subsequent implementation of escort missions.
During the whole replenishment process, the taskforce set multiple guard teams and maintained high-level alertness all day long. In addition, the taskforce carried out drills on such subjects as anti-frogman intrusion in view of the complex situation around the port, to inspect and improve its underwater defense capabilities to ensure the security of replenishment operations.

So it means it can get bigger. We might see 3 runway carrier some day?
I don't think so. But I believe Chinese carriers will be significantly bigger than American ones. The US carriers are stuck at 100,000 tonnes not because it is a tactically magical number. It was a constraint induced by the US shipbuilding industry, which has been on a decline since 1950 and practically non-existent except for warship building for the last 35 years, and the Panama Canal. In fact, even for Nimitzes and Fords the US currently has a single drydock that can be used for building them. This is why they are after light carriers and VTOL aircraft. They can't build CVNs fast enough. Both Nimitz and Ford classes max out the Panama Canal.

To compare, the drydock that built the 003 had 3 more ships in the dock. The 003 was the smallest of the three. There are dozens of similar drydocks in China. There are no limitations induced by the Panama Canal too.

To sum up, I expect two things:
1- Chinese carriers will grow beyond 100,000 tonnes, significantly.
2- There will be no Chinese version of USS America. There is no point in mini carriers and VTOL as long as you can afford bigger ones.

Despite all of this I think stuff like 3 runways or 8 catapults are not practical unless you have a $50 trillion economy and you are planning to base 2000 fighters in oceans.

I disagree.
However...
If China wants to seriously "Troll" the US-navy I cannot think of any better way then to build a 120,000 ton nuclear aircraft carrier and ask to make a friendly US port visit. The trip can be used to "help build trust and foster shared understanding".

China's doing the numbers game, if you have a huge fleet patrolling the Chinese coast and Chinese interests 24/7 it makes it harder for the US Navy to assert their global dominance at least in particularly the South China Sea which seems to be the Wests buzz word of late. No doubt they know the location of any Chinese vessel at all times with use of their satellites and high attitude recon capabilities. And reports of what and where and speculation as to why each and every vessel is there and where is being documented 24/7 so a port visit would be unnecessary and would never be allowed by the US unless we suddenly see a massive change in US foreign policy towards China.

Submarines of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy are using adversary forces operating in the South China Sea as practice partners, a move analysts said on Sunday is a pragmatic approach that can not only enhance the boats’ combat capabilities under real conditions, but also deter those hostile forces from making provocative moves on China’s doorsteps.

A submarine detachment affiliated with the PLA Southern Theater Command Navy was holding an exercise in the South China Sea when an adversary warship was spotted in vicinity, and the Chinese submarine quickly switched from training mode to combat mode, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Saturday.

After the sonar team identified the target, the combat team launched a simulated attack and defense drill with it, the report said.

Similar situations have become routine since Captain Wang Hailiang has become the skipper of the boat some three years ago. Wang told CCTV that “When we spot adversaries at sea entering some sea regions, we would proactively move ahead and meet with them, using them as practice partners.”

“The more we interact with them, the calmer and more confident our sailors are,” Wang said.

In another case, a PLA Navy submarine led by instructor Senior Captain Zhao Aijun was followed by a foreign anti-submarine aircraft after it came to the surface to recharge its batteries, CCTV reported.

Zhao used noises caused by merchant and fishing vessels around as cover to avoid detection, according to the report.

“Only if we train as if it was a war can we fight a war as if it was a training,” CCTV quoted Zhao as saying.

Foreign warships and warplanes, particularly those from the US, often conduct close-in reconnaissance operations and take provocative actions in the South China Sea, the Taiwan Straits and the East China Sea, and they are good chances for the PLA to gather real intelligence on them and boost combat capabilities, a Chinese military expert who requested anonymity told the Global Times on Sunday.

Such simulation trainings are also warnings to those foreign forces, as their movements are all under control of the PLA, the expert said.
