IMO "maximum rage" and "effective range" are often 2 different things. When manufacturers post specs, it's usually best assumption under ideal conditions. You have to look at real-world operating conditions too.

The F-14's AN/AWG-9 is somewhat "battle proven" as the Iranians used them as mini-AWACS. Under ideal conditions it can scan and tract up to 24 targets from as low as 50 feet to as high as 80,000 feet. It had a frontal-arc of ~210km range & ~280km scan-width. Keep in mind that this is a 30+ year old mechanical slotted array type radar. =/

what china reaaly needs is the radar on the mig 31, the zaslon.
200 km range and 10 target tracking.

it's a little too big, unfortunately. We can't really fit something that large on our planes. As for the numbers I listed, those are effective detection ranges. As you have noticed, the search range vs 3 m^2 is 150 km to 160Km. That means, it probably can ocassionally detect planes from that far out, but just unlikely.

well, the zaslon is 80s tech. as weve noticed with ipods and computer, techology seems to shrink a machine.

why only 105 km? the su-27 radar can handle 240 km!!!
the chinese can do better than that. the el-2035 is better!
4-6 target engage ment wit 130 km range.

Any range numbers is useless without a valid frame of reference. Detect what? What is the radar size or cross section of the target?

What the Russians were quoting as 240km is against a large bomber sized target. What the Russians are quoting at 110km is actually against a much stealthier F-16 sized target. In reality, its the same radar and radar performance. The Russians are just playing creative with the numbers (BARS = 330km against a large bomber sized RCS target; 150-160km against an F-16 sized target).

I think the talk of 330 KM range is just by some Indians. The actual detection range is only 120-140 KM vs 5 m^2 targets

Although JDW was quoted as saying its 140-160KM.
