Chinese air to ground weapons (missiles, PGMs, etc)

Interesting.

"Medium Range" in Air-to-Air world usually means that it is a BVR weapon.

So, an IR-homing BVR missile? Something like the R-27T, which was also imported by China along with the Su-27SK package?

Could be fairly useful, when it is to work like the PL-12/AIM-120, when cruising via mid-course datalink guidance and activating the passive ImIR homing mode at terminal stage.

The missile's body is strange, though. Looks like a more refined HAWK-SAM with those wings. Not something that is typical for an AAM.

I know the tip is suppose to house the seeker but is that for some sort of shotgun effect? I saw an animation of an anti-missile system that employed a "shotgun" burst downward against a missile. When I first saw that pic I thought it looked like a rocket pod on a missile.

I think missiles and artillery shells can achieve a shot gun effect without having to resort to any major observable physical changes.

The AHEAD round disperses shrapnel the same way you describe and externally doesn't look that different to any other AA shell

I imagine it is related to its seeker head, but I have no idea way it needs to be faceted like so. After all, IR/ImIr guided missiles have existed for years with fairly standard round apertures. Maybe it has to do with improving resolution or something?

The facet shape may be less draggy than traditional dome shape for IR missile. That may be important for a medium range missile, which is usually faster than short range missile. Less drag also help retain energy for end stage maneuver.

Just found at Huitong's site ... a new smaller (maybe 250 kg) LGB but what's interesting it features an updated seeker head similar to the one we 've also seen on updated LS-500J alias GB-500.

IMO it is in fact a PLAAF-version of the GB-250 ?!!

To anyone listening:
is this the thread in which Chinese air to air missiles would be discussed? If not, please direct me to that thread; I just discovered the F-80 infra-red, medium range, air to air missile, and i'm dying to see if it's been discussed here and what perspectives the SDF discussion comprises.

We do have an AAM thread:
https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/chinese-aam.t1481/page-21#post-330737

But the F-80 has been discussed before, on the immediate preceding page actually.

And, actually, continues onto this page!
Thanks, Blitz!
Any idea why search term "F-80 infra-red air to air missile or AAM" wouldn't have returned that page?
I'm sorry. I don't know why I asked you that as you're not a moderator, yet! ;)
