Anyway, if it is true, I'd be interested in whether the guy had been funneling information for a while and only just caught or if he'd only recently begun to and counter intelligence was able to pick him up. Unfortunately if it is true we probably won't get this information...

If a deputy director was caught spying for bribes, how bad is the corruption in the Chinese defence industry? It looks like it's not just the party and the PLA that needs a complete overhaul.

They could be testing RCS of a new aircraft proposal, and it could be related... hard to say.
The satellite image doesn't look like it's J-20 at any rate... but it's so blurry, who knows.

We don't know enough about the situation yet... I don't think any of us even know what position the guy actually held (deputy director of AVIC in what exactly), let alone if he was actually spying, or what he was spying in exchange for.

And the defence industry has been undergoing an overhaul along with the military and party.

Let's wait for some more reliable sources before everyone starts freaking out.

This makes makes me wish it's unrelated to the j-20. Otherwise it means delaying the program back for years.

If espionage claims are true, then the aerodynamics are the least of the problems perhaps no problem at all. The critical elements that could be compromised would be RADAR, IFF, EW systems, data-links, Missile Seekers etc. These will require a complete upgrade or a complete redesign and will put the programs back many years. And since it is AVIC, it means the J-20 is not the only one affected if this story is true. All systems in J-10, J-11, J-15, J-16 could have been compromised.

My take is that this is pure rumor. If it is espionage, we would not know about it. they could simply use a corruption excuse to cover it. The fact that we know about it suggest that this is simply a rumor.

I'm sure China has multiple mechanisms to monitor officials who can access such sensitive information. if they happened to have a slip up, they could simply sack the official with some lame excuse. Nowadays, sacking corruptive officials is so common in China and virtually all officials in China are believed to be corrupted any ways. No one will make a big deal out of it.

So why let people know about the espionage? It's embarrassing and damaging. Doesn't make any sense...

Plus, even if they decided to make sweeping changes to their designs. Wouldn't it be better to do it without letting anyone knowing about it? Wouldn't it be better if they simply let the US believe that they didn't know about the espionage and the US actually had the most current info on China's most advanced weapons?

Someone with too much time on their hands decided to make up some fake news... This seems to happen a lot in China.

Can somebody actually scout out that location and do a rough measurement?

The rumour of a redesign was probably just some guy on the Chinese BBS making a suggestion from his or her own thinking based off the espionage rumours.

The satellite picture of the RCS model is probably entirely separate to whoever made up that rumour, and this satellite photo of the RCS model on Jane's emerging just as this supposed arrest of this "deputy director" is almost certainly a coincidence.

In other words, talk of a redesign and the satellite RCS image are probably unrelated.

More importantly, it's pretty obvious to see that the RCS model is a completely different configuration to J-20, it's basically an entirely new aircraft and probably single engined as well. That scale of changes woul d make no sense
