Can anyone tell me what the 2 things sticking out of the top of the Type 96A(?) which aren't machine guns or sights are?

It is a ZTZ-99. The one on the gunner’s side is a laser APS and the other one is probably a meteorological sensor.
wait laser APS as in actively interfering with enemy targeting and incoming missiles, or APS as in destorying incoming weapons? (sorry for dumb question I haven't been keeping up with army tech recently =(

The former. Idea is that it blinds enemy's sensors when it detects that the tank is being lazed. Interestingly, the ZTZ-99 has 3 canisters on the APS - that could also be some sort of smoke launcher launching in the direction of the enemy that is lazing you to block them from seeing the tank. This 'launcher' is not present on the newer 99A.

Should be the interference one. Haven't heard of a small laser with enough power to directly destroy incoming projectile.

It burns the targeting sensor. It can’t destroy incoming projectiles.
Many thanks for the clarification!
