Re: Russian Navy Cruiser Varyag in China

Slava class cruiser. Typical of Soviet doctrine. Huge first punch with those large ASMs...but they must be reloaded in port.

They made those ships to hunt US high value targets and then rush in to take their shots. Chances were, after those shots they were going to be dead meat, though they did have decent AAW defenses.

Now, in todays world, they are very potent ASuW vessels in any SAG if they are used that way.

They were building eight at the time the wall came down. There are now three in service...two of those only recently after very liong refits.

Do the Sovremenny's share the same handicap?

Chinese & Russian navies conduct anti-submarine exercise in Yellow Sea

A Russian naval task group arrived at the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao on Saturday for joint exercises with the Chinese navy, a captain said.

"Each vessel was welcomed individually," Captain Roman Martov told RIA Novosti.

The naval squadron, including the Varyag missile cruiser, three Udaloy class destroyers and three fleet support ships, will join 16 Chinese surface ships for drills in the Yellow Sea between Aril 22 and 27.

As regards their main ASM armament, yes.

Like the Slava, the Soviets designed them to hunt US capitol ships.

HAving said that, the newer 956EM models can be used to fomr a strong SAG and do have decet AAW and ASW capabilities. PLAN has two of each...and since they operate mainly in the CHina Sea, not far from port, in any conrofntation there they would be a strong platform against the ROCN, ROKN, or JMSDF...and partilcularly decisive against the smaller navies like the Philipines and Vietnam.

Do not get me wrong, they are dangerous combatants and have to be respected. They were designed with very large, very fast main ASuW missiles...you do not want to get in range of those babies if you can avoid it.
