He's saying that China will need ACs even if she doesn't plan to operate them far from her shores. It's not that hard.

I sm not surprised by the fast pace of the development. The airframe appears quite conservative. The electronics are probably derived from models already in service.

not so quick

you are balancing a huge radar on top of a small medium sized aircraft

then you take this aircraft and launch it from a carrier

and then you ask it to land too

the aerodynamics and physics involved here are very difficult to master

and the fact that really USN is only the master at is says alot more

Soviet tried but never really succeeded with the Yak-44

Aircraft carriers are intended to operate far away from their homeland, otherwise you do not need an aircraft carrier.


Even if China *only* likes to have strong control within 1st island chain, carriers are needed. Both South and East China seas are very large. When you consider 2nd island chain, they are definitely required. So you don need to go that far from Mainland to justify carriers.
