So another mock up? Or the same mock up?
Either way the only AEW birds available right now are either old USN birds, new US Hawkeyes neither available to the PRC or Helicopters.
The Russians started work through YAK along with a cat system but it was cancelled and is now pushing 40 years old. What this means is that the PRC has to basically start with a clean sheet of paper as the YAK 44 was built for a radar, engines, avionics and equipment that would be decades out of date.

Radar, Avionic can change over time but the basic aerodynamic ,structural strength doesn't change that much over time
I once worked with British guy who work on the design of wood structure plane forgot the name
He told me the basic structure of the newest fighter is more or less the same And he is consultant for Challenger aircraft of then Canadair now Bombardier

The problem here is any newer radar for a AEW that the PRC could try fly with will be a totally different weight, higher electric needs and the Chinese would demand a reduced weight via composites.

There has never been a mock up like this before. There was a structural demonstrator, but that wasn't a mock up intended for placement atop the wuhan carrier mock up.

We've known for a while that their fixed wing AEW&C would basically be a fresh design, potentially based off Y-7 but it would be so highly modified that it may as well be a new aircraft.

I don't think anyone believes China would have adopted Yak-44 (let alone E-2??), so Russian and US developments in this arena are immaterial to the conversation.

China is inducting a new helicopter based off a 40yr-old foreign design, so I don't know why inducting a 40yr old foreign AEW design would be out of the question.

In fact, "based off a 40+ yr-old foreign design" would seem to describe most Chinese platforms currently in production.

so if we see this model AEW&C put ontop of the carrier mock up building in Wuhan, we can safely assume that the end product will look very similiar. so this is the real deal.

Are you talking about Yak-44 here?

The difference between adopting a Yak-44 variant vs adopting older helicopter designs, is that China has never operated Yak-44s or have any experience with them, whereas the old helicopter designs (like Z-8 and its modern variants) are ones that China has operated for a long time and long experience in.


If China had acquired a Yak-44 airframe or some extensive material on it then I would consider that to be a sensible argument for China potentially adopting it in some form, like a modified domestic variant.

But as it is, we do not have any evidence for the Chinese aerospace industry having any extensive access to Yak-44 or E-2 or any other similar aircraft, so the only logical conclusion we can come to is that it makes sense for China to adopt an existing aircraft they have experience with (like Y-7) as the basis of a new AEW&C, or a clean sheet design, or a mixture of both. However, that does not mean China will not take cues from established and proven principles that E-2 or Yak-44 have demonstrated in the past.

The very notion of bringing in E-2 or Yak-44 into this discussion about the fixed wing AEW&C is a bit silly to begin with. Beyond the chinese navy carrier AEW&C having the same configuration as them (which I think everyone should've expected anyway), I don't see how any formal design connection to those aircraft is logical.
