Japanese doing illegal geographic point calibration measuring were captured in Xinjiang by Chinese armed police(not SOF).

Chinese newspapers run story that Japan is preparing to missile strike on China - maybe Chinese needs to launch a preemptive nuclear strike on Japan to prevent that.

that is sad news:( Growing china needs accurate GIS and survey data, and all know the Japanese expertice in this field. Such paranoia is similar that many finnish companies have to face in todays Russia, as in Soviet days, no "startegical" targets location data was to be given in less than 50m accuracy. Thats just stubid IMO

It does not involve any expertise. They just used GPS. If China need that data, we can use GPS ourselves.

They use high-precision GPS to calibrate their sat image and maps, well Chinese are not dumb.

Many readers suggested they should be shot right on spot, PLA are not going that far though.

well how much both of you have worked with civil engineerings or surveying??

I can assure, that nothing keeps china more in to stone age than crappy maps and location data. Fishead, as you seem to know what they were doing there, could you eleborate more, of what sort of GPS methods they were using and perhaps I can give you a little insigth (from my onw education in this field) of what they were propaply doing in reality and you dont need to fear paranoidly some irrational missile strike from nation that doesent have such capacity:)

China has two laws about this and they were treated according to the laws. You wanna do this, you ask permission from Chinese authorities, otherwise, you break the law.

laws or not it still doesent give excuse for paranoia over some wild "Japanese missile attacks". Civil GPS surveys are everyday life, even high-precission GPS surveys and I bet that china actually loses if it retains hostile aproach to foreing engineers

Well, law is law. And I don't think it will affect your job if you go apply a permission from Chinese authorities. Besides, we just got somebody threaten to attack us by CBGs and if we use our misterious so called anti ship ballastic missiles to attack those ships they will use nuclear missiles to attack us. Also, imagine, can you get away with paying a little fine and your GPS if you broke this kind of law in his country?

well the key issue is the purpose of those surveyers. All Im saying that its foolish to automatically except them to be on sucpicious intents. After all, like for myself as I will most propaply do lot of that sort of work once I graduate, It wouldn't even cross my mind to go to ask legal promise to do such basic engineering work. Perhaps the japanese surveyers were just totally unware of chinese culture on such things, becouse I belive that in Japan (like in other western countries) such laws are unknown....

The key issue is there're laws. law do not ask for purpose. It's not about culture. The first law were just past some years later. But in recent years, so many japanese came to do this without any authorization. So there's the second law dedicated to foreigners. It's like an explaination about the first law. Then, there are still more japanese coming and do this without authorization. The punishment is just take your equipment and data, and some fine.
