For over 20 years, Kawasaki Heavy Industries falsified data to ensure the performance of diesel engines used in submarines met the Ministry of Defense's requirements. All 25 submarines currently in service with the Maritime Self-Defense Force were affected. The discovery was made during an investigation by Kawasaki Heavy Industries into data falsification in commercial engines.
The Ministry of Defense's current planned punishment is merely a 2.5-month ban on bidding, likely because Kawasaki Heavy Industries has long been a major supplier and leaving them with no other options.
Of course, this is not surprising to those who have long followed Japanese industry; they have been falsifying industrial product data extensively since the 1990s.
