In terms of priority I think it's the opposite, WS-19 first, then WS-15, then WS-20?

Wasn't there lots of fanfare a while back regarding some WS-19 breakthrough? We'll see how it goes but I won't hold my breath for it.

I think time is the essence. In terms of technology China will figure it out, just like semiconductor.

What about all those pictures which popped up years ago of the WS-19 prototype and team? We have had a lot more leaks of the WS-19 than the WS-15 I think. The WS-19 engine prototype was probably developed a lot faster than the WS-15 prototype because when design started China had a lot more engine design experience to rely upon.

The prototypes might not be reliable enough yet but, given for how long we have heard of the prototypes, in other countries with more mature programs this engine wouldn't take much longer to be developed to fruition. It typically takes between 5-10 years to develop an engine depending on if it is based on some existing technology or is all new.

If for whatever reason the engines aren't available they can still use the RD-33MK as an interim engine. It has about the same performance as the Super Hornet engine.

Geez I hope not. VTOL means you lose most of your payload. Plus any VTOL aircraft will have way more accidents than a non-VTOL aircraft. The Harrier was notoriously accident prone for example. Helicopters also have much worse accident rates than fixed wing aircraft. Any engine trouble in vertical flight can lead to terrible consequences. Now that China is going to have EMALS why bother with VTOL?

A single engine aircraft with the WS-15 might make sense if Chinese engine reliability improves further but this is quite far from being a done deal. I think it makes more sense for J-10 replacement than a naval plane. Perhaps on a drone. That would be more effective.

News circulating on the Chinese internet is that the new "350001" has new green-colored paint (IMO same as the J-15 prototype earlier this year), redesigned front fuselage that represent F-35, front-opening cockpit like the F-35, no (visible) refuel probe, no side weapon bays, no (visible) tail hook and ws-13 as the engine. (things in parenthesis are my personal annotations)

Personally I'm taking a pinch of saly on this, mainly because I can see absolutely no reason that SAC would go with the front-opening cockpit design...
