J-XY - maybe J-35 - next generation carrier-borne fighter

The planes are not in the same weight class, 2 ws-10s would be overkill for j35
I think he means running off interim engines like the WS-13 similar to the WS-10/J-20 situation. As to your previous point, the J-20 was China's first stealth fighter and the J-XY has already been in the oven for quite some time as the FC-31, both of those factors indicate that rollout will be significantly faster than the J-20.

You are talking about the need and ideal situation, we also know that China's engine situation has never been ideal. Is there anything tangible to tell where they actually are?
About the need, I don't see how 003 can be completed this year, I think it's still two years away from sea trial. Even by then, they can use J-15T to fill the trial gap. If J-35 is not ready, it's not ready and they'll just have to work around it.

I think J-35 is still on the drawing board and we need to be patient.

Looming Carrierborne Stealth

sources suggesting the FC-31 derived fighter will make its maiden flight in 2021. This aircraft has also been long awaited, and a 2021 maiden flight would comfortably fit within the range of projections made from past years.

Otherwise, pictures of the FC-31 demonstrators (specifically airframe number 31003, also known as the flying “V2” demonstrator) being tested continue to leak out once every few months, which could correspond to work relevant to their carrierborne, PLA-funded variant. As always, it is part of dutiful responsibility to remind readers that the “J-31” designation doesn’t exist for any Chinese fighter, and that the “J-31” is actually the FC-31 export fighter proposal instead. Whether the proper, PLA-funded carrierborne FC-31 derivative will be called “J-31” or “J-35” or some other designation is not yet known.

Also based on @Deino tweets:

I don't think the PLAN completely throws the J-15 off the 003's air wing anyway, we'd probably see them mix it up like the USN currently does with their Super Hornets and F-35Cs. If I had to guess, the air wing would probably be composed of a single seat J-15 squadron (or whatever the PLAN nomenclature is), a two-seat J-15 squadron, a J-XY squadron, and a squadron (3-5 planes) of J-15Ds for EW. Anyways getting a bit off topic, but just to illustrate that we'd most likely see a mix of J-15s and J-XYs to answer the 003 strike fighter needs.

If J-20 can run off ws-10s I don't see why J-XY can't

You will have to run it off from a single WS-10 or better yet WS-15. However this means you have to redesign the air frame which can add years to the development. The result makes it more F-35ish.

Having the same engine commonality would be however, great in the long run when it comes to logistics as you would be standardizing on the WS-10/15 engine family and the established support infrastructure around the WS-10.

If I were PLAN admiral I would have ordered development of such a variant long ago.

I do think there's a non-insignificant chance that the PLAAF (not PLANAF) may be passing on the FC-31 derived design. Perhaps with a single engine, WS15 equipped plane design in its sights for the future, to start replacing the J-10s from the year 2030 (or so) onward.

Don’t get your hopes up too high. It has been tease but no strip for almost a decade.

But at least some day it must be unveiled... or am I wrong? I don't think that all these rumours, reports and hints towards the J-35 and its alleged maiden flight are wrong. At least I hope not.
