Actually, its possible j16 range isn't anything special. Su30 range was 3500 km, which is for a plane of that size fairly average. Now j16 might be slightly lighter, or maybe its emgines are slightly more fuel efficient. Or it may even have room for a few hundred kilos of fuel more. But still, i dont think its really gonna outrange basic su-27.

That said, j35 is quite slender with a huge weapon bay. Its not realistic expecting it to have range long range.
With huge ramp up of air tankers, it may be pla decided range can even suffer compared to j16, as tankers will compensate for it. For first island chain missions its gonna be enough anyway.

was this ever explicitly stated by CCTV or other official media?
I have not seen any explicit statements to this effect from China's official media, as they are usually quite implicit. It is a consensus among many that the J-35 is benchmarked against the F-35. In particular, the PLA Navy currently has only this one fifth-generation fighter jet at its disposal to counter the F-35.

Deino, we just got a stealth fighter:View attachment 168378

Looks like a more mild mannered gentle soul that the Deino we actually know ;) ....

Btw - Have we seen any air to air refuelling videos the J-35 so far ? Given where the programme is in the production lifecycle, this part will have been tested/verified at this point, especially given the overwater, and naval requirements.

At least this Deino is a much younger version of the current old & grey one like today (left)! ... and usually I am a "mild mannered gentle soul"! ;) PS, that guy in the middle was a very interesting one! He is the the military attaché in Vienna I met last September.

Regarding your question however, I think we haven't seen IFR-trials yet.

Considering J-35A and J-35 are at least in IOT&E service if not near IOC, it is inevitable that IFR tests and trials would have been done during the EMD phase as part of general testing -- including weapons testing, flight envelope testing, etc etc.

However, as per normal, we have no footage or evidence of it, and chances are we may never actually get footage of actual tests itself.

It is likely that when we do get footage/evidence of J-35/A doing in flight refuelling it will not be of "tests" but of routine training or operations.

Maybe in another thread you can post about some of the insider news/tidbits you heard at the event!
