Indian, Russian forces to conduct joint exercise

New Delhi

Indian and Russian Special Forces will conduct their first-ever joint exercise in October, focusing on jointness in airborne anti-terrorist operations. The exercise will take place in western India's Rajasthan desert region.

Defence sources in New Delhi said the week-long manoeuvres, involving an airborne commando battalion from each side, will strive for "inter-operability" for possible future joint peacekeeping operations focused broadly on the volatile Central Asian Region.

Although Moscow is India's oldest and largest supplier of defence equipment, direct military interaction has been limited to just one round of naval manoeuvres in 2003. A second round of naval exercises is scheduled for October in the eastern Bay of Bengal in which a Russian Akula-class Type 971 nuclear powered submarine will take part.

Do you think AK carrier will participate in a new aeronaval China-Russia joint exercise in the next months ?
Or in a future China-India and Russia joint exercise in the way to show their interoperability ?

The Kuznetsov will not be involve. Only the Pacific fleet is.

Is India really buying an Akula Sub?

Pacific Fleet Moving South
// To participate in Russian-Indian naval maneuvers
Yesterday the battle group of ships from Pacific Ocean Fleet left from Vladivostok to Indian Ocean, where they would participate in joint Russian-Indian naval maneuvers INDRA-2005. The maneuvers also have a goal to demonstrate to the top brass of Indian army and navy the nuclear sub Project 09710 “Samara†– two subs of this class are being built right now in Komsomolsk-on- Amur for New Delhi. Yesterday, the battle group of ships left Vladivostok and is on the way to the Indian Ocean. Among the ships of the group there are: missile cruiser Varyag, large antisubmarine ships Admiral Tributs and Admiral Panteleev, tanker Pechenga, and the rescue tug Kalar. The group is under command of Vice Admiral Sergey Avramenko, Deputy Commander of Pacific Ocean Fleet (POF). In the ocean the ships would be joined by nuclear sub Project 09710 “Samara†with the number K-295. The sub is coming from Kamchatka. On October 14 the POF battle group will enter port Vishahanatman. The port located in Bengalese Bay and considered to be the main naval base of India’s Eastern Fleet.

From Oct. 17 until Oct. 19, the Russian sailors will participate in joint Russian-Indian naval maneuvers INDRA-2005. According to Adm. Avramenko, during the maneuvers Varyag, Admiral Tributs and Admiral Panteleev will fire from the all weapons systems: antisubmarine missiles "Volcano", missile- torpedoes "Socket", anti-aircraft missiles "Fort", "Wasp-M" and the "Dagger." Also, according to Kommersant information, the nuclear sub of “Samara†class will demonstrate its capability. (The vessels of this project are made with extremely low-noise powerplant and their hull made out of low-magnetic steel.) The interest of Indian navy to this sub is understandable: two subs of this class are being built right now in Komsomolsk-on- Amur for New Delhi. One of the ships named “Nerpa†(Seal) is already on the water and its nuclear reactor has been started. Kommersant learned that the sub could be transferred to the Indian navy as early as the end of 2006. Another sub is 70 percent ready.
After the completion of INDRA-2005, the Russian battle group (excluding sub K-295) will visit Indonesian capital Jakarta, then Singapore, Sattahip(Thailand) and Hai Phong (Vietnam). The ships will return to the Vladivostok on Dec.14.

Let’s remind that the last time when the Russian battle group of ships left the port for the Indian Ocean was in 2001. Back in that time, the large anti-submarine ships of POF Admiral Vinogradov and Admiral Pantellev, escorted by the tanker Vladimir Kilechitsky paid a visit to Mumbay, which is the main naval base of Indian fleet. Two years after Moscow held large scale naval maneuvers: in May of 2003 two battle groups from POF and Black Sea Fleet led by missile-cruiser Moskva. The POF was represented by two large anti-submarines ships Marshall Shaposhnikov and Admiral Panteleev. They conducted joint maneuvers with Indian navy with participation of Russian strategic bombers Tu-160 and Tu-95MS. After the completion of the maneuvers, Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Ivanov promised that Russian-Indian maneuvers would become traditional.

NEW DELHI, AUG 31: India is all set to get two Akula class third generation multipurpose submarines on lease — with the option to buy them— from Russia by end of this year.

According to sources, the recent construction of a training centre for the Indian defence officers in Sosnovy Bor, west of St Petersburg, confirms Russia’s intentions to lease nuclear submarines to India.
“The international centre will start training 300 Indian Naval officers by mid-September,†officials said. This constitutes 4 Akula crews.

This centre also trains Russian Naval officers and houses working nuclear reactors of the type found on nuclear submarines. These reactors are used to test nuclear fuel and other technologies applicable to nuclear submarine reactors.

While defence ministry is tight-lipped about the training of naval submariners, experts at PIR-Centre, Moscow, told FE, “It is quite possible that the centre will be training Indian experts and navy officers in the field not only from the point of view of official leasing of submarines with nuclear reactors, but also from the point of developing such a submarine by Indians themselves.â€

Sources said such a training in Sosnovy Bor was a testament to the notion that Russia has not given up on its plans of leasing nuclear submarines.

It may be recalled that defence minister Pranab Mukherjee had said that negotiations about obtaining a Russian nuclear submarine were underway.

The two Akulas, one 70-85% complete and the other 40-60% complete, will cost India some $400m. The leasing costs would amount to some $25m a year. The construction of both submarines and training of the crews could run, according to experts, to around $2 billion.

i believe the russians should send the kutznev, a slava, and some subs to exercise with the pla. it can show off the abilities of the ships against china's own vessels and let the pla decide whaether or not to buy such weapons or convert varyag based on performance.

Slava is doable. They already did that last month. Kuznetsov might be a problem. The North Sea fleet is on the other side of the world.

Yeah it looks that way. Both China and Russia has been openly stressing an India-Russia-China block to counter US hegemony. With China and India on the same side, I wonder where it leaves Sino-Pakistani relationship?

China-Pakistan-Myanmar-Bengladesh-Iran-India-Russia VS USA ?
Hmmm....It should be a possible axis against USA and Japan
But the key in Asia-Pacific is the the "ambigious" relation between Pak and USA.... ;)
The regional negociations for oil and gaz pipelines from Iran and Turkmenistan to Afghanistan,Pak,India,Bengladesh and China (via the "chinese" Gwadar port in Pak) + oil pipeline from Myanmar to India and China are good facts...
Tu-22 Backfire, SU-30 and Akula are not so far too...
