Re: Popular culture
I have 2 remixes of that song (Nobody) but in general I still do not follow any particular group or solo-singer anymore.
There are definately a good/catchy bunch of (k/j - pop) songs out there but whether they can perform well live is highly in question. I know Ive come several like that where they all can look 'cool' or 'pretty' but really cannot sing live. Of course, Im not against looking good. Just most memorable I remember there was a music festival in Singapore a few years back and I remember seeing some live recordings on various sites. I recall only 2 bands (one was japanese, the other i forgot) held their ground well in terms of singing. The others (still from japan, taiwan, korea) either (pretty much) lip-synced and just danced or they sang HORRIDLY despite their popularity. But again, I don't care so as the MP3 version doesnt sound that bad (not like I will attend a concert live anytime soon).
I wonder around various genres from the regular rock, rap, pop, r-and-b, etc. to remixes, techno, electronica, new age and other music genre types that may combine old traditional songs with new instruments or with a (re)freshed tune. But of course not everyone likes what I listen to of course - i.e. one person in public scolded one of what I was listening to as "annoying elevator music" (hahaha xD). In reality I do not fit in with the "modern/younger" groups or the "older" groups (sadly?). Many have said those 'retakes' on or remixes using/including older traditional songs or folk songs, etc.) ruins them. Others would simply see me as 'gay' for listening to pop or anything not screaming rock or rap, etc.
But hey, a shout to Martian+A.Man's earlier link as well. I think Alan is a good one. I heard one of her songs (a song that she sang in Japanese and also has a Chinese version as well) and used the Tibetan wailing technique(?). She also song the theme(s) in Red Cliff. (and i need not point out her looks)
EDIT: well... cleaning took longer than expected. Anyway, here are some of the links. Most are from the same person/account as he tends to post a lot of media but they provide examples of my range. PS. wanted to use spoiler tags so no one has to scroll through links they do not care about... but cant find them (rather they are disabled? I tried typing

The Wonder Girls' "Nobody" makes me want to dance. I'm going out to buy their CD.

and / version but nothing)
probably well known by most/some here? was not to me until recently:
Contemporary/New Age/"World(?)"
Here, I have to throw in the 12 Girls Band too. My cousin told me about them after discovering what I tended to like at that time)
Here is a (mando)pop example of a interesting mix of something old and something new that is fairly recent:
Someone posted Alan earlier, here is mine of 2 other if her pieces
and these "NON-Han" are for (a) pure (attempt at) entertainment/amusement

*warning: turn down the volume before listening*
did a number to my ears after just blasting techno and then later transitioned to viewing/listening to this piece
seen him on TV a little while back
