I'm not suggesting anyone do anything. What are you suggesting? China should sink the ships sailing thru?
Only if there's more and larger US ships than Chinese ships shadowing them, otherwise it'll be kinda humiliating for the US side.I'm not suggesting anyone do anything.
I just think it would be hugely humiliating for China if the US sails warships down the straight in a few days time.
The US strategic reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft of Japan and Taiwan are activated.
49 Chinese aircraft violated Taiwan's airspace
I understand that, and maybe you're right. If the US is not going to send an aircraft carrier then maybe it is them that look humiliated.Only if there's more and larger US ships than Chinese ships shadowing them, otherwise it'll be kinda humiliating for the US side.
Remember the China straits are misleading named, its not an actual enclosed strait like Gibraltar or Bosphorus, it's more of a channel like the British channel. Ships can transit through according to international law as long as they don't touch either sides of the PRC around the straits.
No, something has changed: it'll be escorted by a massive show of force that wasn't possible in 1996, just like it did in the SCS with a smaller show of force.Surely the humiliation will be all the greater, now.
China conducts this grand show of force, meant, in part, to put the past humiliation behind them, and then immediately after up pops the US sailing past down the straight as if nothing has changed.
That's actually US propaganda. The US announced sailing their ships toward China near the end of the exist knowing that by the time they got there, the exercise would have ended to make it look like they were scared of the carriers. What use is there if the USS Reagan or other aircraft carriers will only come to Taiwan strait in the future? Likely after the current drills ended? What signal does that send to Taiwan, and to US allies and enemies around the world? Last time in 1996 the US sent two carrier battles groups and 40+ ships into Taiwan strait DURING the drills. Not AFTER
I understand that, and maybe you're right. If the US is not going to send an aircraft carrier then maybe it is them that look humiliated.
But in just a few days!
I don't think any laws or rules or norms come into it at this point - not that the US has any continuity of its own in that regard anyway.
