The length of the catapults determines the acceleration needed to get to launch speed. That, in turn, is limited more by human physiology and tolerances than anything else, hence the similar lengths.

The French carrier uses the same C13 steam catapult as the US, but the length is listed as 50m rather than 75m. The French one is listed with the same end speed, but with a lower maximum weight.

That implies 50m is workable from an acceleration point of view

You actually refuted yourself.

less maximum (take off) mass means less total kinetic energy needed, therefor shorter distance for an aircraft to accumulate that energy to reach the same end speed as an heavier counterpart.

Uh no

I was responding to the comment that 75m was the minimum length of catapult required, and that this limitation was due to allowable acceleration

But if the French version is only 50m long and has the same end-speed, that implies a higher acceleration is acceptable

It's not a comment on the energy requirement, if you read it again

you are right. I wasn't paying attention to "acceleration".

It would be interesting to see how long is the machinery section of the 003, and compared to that of the Ford. I suspect the greater length of the Ford might b3 necessitated by greater space requirement of nuclear power plant.
