CV-18 Fujian/003 CATOBAR carrier thread

As in my reply to his tweet ... Actually I think there is still only one hangar/flightdeck module since these two huge holes in the lower section are still clearly visible. Or do I miss a detail?
I expect the two large openings down to the engine rooms to be preserved, although the flight deck is already taking its shape. It was like that with Shandong.

I think this is what horobeyo meant. Also the 2 huge holes will not be covered until the final stages, most likely after the island structure has been added.

If you look at the high-res sate images posted two days ago, you can see some smaller modules lying next to the dry dock. I believe those modules are the side-walls of the hanger; similar structures have appeared during 002 constructions. Even if the other parts are not yet added, they will be fitted soon; evidence is that the top of hull has been cleaned.

take a look to the shadow - it is only the one and first segment, not more

I think lcloo is referring to the second, more blurry picture rather than the first, clearer picture.

In the first, clearer picture it is obvious that based on both the image of the hull itself and the shadow cast by it, that there is only one major grey coloured large hangar/flight deck module that's been added, obvious as seen both of the image of the hull as well as the shadow.

But in the second, less clear image, it looks like there are additional grey coloured "wall" modules added immediately anterior and posterior to the initial grey coloured large hangar/flight deck module. The second, less clear image also doesn't have a good casting of the shadows for us to visibly discern an obvious segment in the same way as the first image.

So it's hard to say.

Regardless of whether they've added additional wall modules, I do think that if the construction of CV-17 was any guide (where it had various wall modules for the hangars added first before the hull openings were closed), it would not be unexpected for 003 to go through something similar.

edit; crudely annotated and not scaled, but you should get the drift.
L side: blue represents the "initial large grey hangar/flight deck module"
R side: green represents additional "wall modules" added.

Not sure if it's the case in real life, but it's plausible. I'm sure we will get pictures over the next few weeks to show us anyhow.

Note that 2 elevators won't be an issue if they are large enough to lift two fighters at a time.

Also, is it confirmed that 003 will have conventional propulsion considering that the white blobs are suspected to be boilers? No more retarded talk about radiation shielding and 'lack of smokestack hole' in the vain hope that it would be nuclear?

So we can call people retarded now :) So trump of you.

It will be nuclear. ?! If this is not, next one. :D And by the way, lack of smokestack will be a really good indication :D

The point of PLA watching is to try to gradually hone in on the most likely eventualities over time.

For carrier 003, it should have been long obvious at least 2-3 years ago that it would not be nuclear. For individuals who persisted in thinking it would be nuclear in the last couple of years, at best they could be considered overenthusiastic, at worst simply detached from reality.

Even if it's not nuclear it's still very impressive, 10 years ago China didn't have a single carrier they now operate two carriers comparable to the one russia has a conventional kitty hawk sized carrier seems to be a good stepping stone towards a nuclear carrier larger than the ford class, the whole program is running exactly how it should be, pragmatic and far sighted.

The boilers are right there and you're still hoping that 003 will be nuclear? Despite everything up to now suggesting that it will not be nuclear? This ship started construction in 2017, Jiangnan is only just starting to build nuclear handling facilities and there is zero evidence that China has developed the large marine reactors needed to power a ship this size.

Nuclear 003 is possible but it's an extreme hypothetical that goes against all common sense. So yes, the notion is quite retarded, though not necessarily incorrect. If the island appears without a smokestack I'll ban myself for a month.
