I think China should seriously re-think his partnership if this aircraft uses any Russian parts it will be embargoed by the West

and finding export orders may prove difficult

CR929 won't be bought by any western country anyway so not that important whether it has Chinese or Russian or western parts in it from export perspective. They wont even buy Chine cell phones :D

That is a so weird suggestion. Huawei, ZTE etc. etc. have been sanctioned by the west for more than 4 years. Do they have anything to do with Russia? After so long time of open hostility, you still think that there is a way to please the west, you are out of contact with reality.

China won't expect any western countries to import COMAC aircraft. BUT China is still importing Airbus aircraft, remember that. If the west dare to block COMAC export to any non western countries, be ready for China to kick Airbus and Boeing out of China, and block them from flying over Chinese airspace. Keeping Russian engine (and other components) as an option to C-929 is precisely to keep the west behave.

It is not only the west able to go rouge, China can turn over the table too.

It likely won’t be bought by major western national/private airline in Boeing or Airbus home turf of the US, Canada, France, Germany, UK. But that doesn’t lock it out of the Budget carriers (Remember the Spirit reports) , nonaligned or lesser western airlines. Even in the heart of the Cold War Air France and JLA flew Soviet IL 62.

Well Telecoms equipment from the ZTE and Huawei Chinese brand have hit a wall with the Five Eyes, Lenovo is still in the US market, the emphasis here is misleading as Other product including heavy equipment and State owned OEMS have made inroads into western markets.
Hongqi is sold in Norway, Great Wall in Australia, Lynk & Co is supposed to launch on the UK 2023 and already in the EU, Dungfang Trucks via Volvo/CRRC has a plant not 30 miles south of where I am standing, building trains in the US

Avic has a position in smaller aviation products even in the US via Cirrus Aviation. So to claim that Comac should give up any attempt at export to any western state because they will never succeed, becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. “I can’t succeed ergo I won’t try.”

Realistically no Comac isn’t likely to take huge contracts from AB in the next decade but the markets swing. They are remarkably young in offerings that could complete with the Dualopoly well it grows likely blustered State Airlines.

I agree Chinas economic strength is far greater than its military

unfortunately Russia is the other way round

but if both can work on each others weakness they can become stronger together

Eh, Russia's economy kind of turned out to be stronger (or atleast more resilient) than their military.

Like people expected their military to do well, and their economy to suffer to sanctions, but basically the opposite has heppened.

The development of the PD-35 engine will depend on the work on the CR929 aircraft​

In August 2022, Alexander Inozemtsev, Deputy General Director of UEC JSC for the management of NPK Perm Motors, Managing Director - General Designer of UEC-Aviadvigatel JSC, announced at the Army International Military-Technical Forum that due to the upcoming workload of Perm engine builders with the serial production of PD-14 and PS-90A, as well as participation in the PD-8 program and the corresponding redistribution of resources, the PD-35 program is shifting “to the right” (delayed). Now in an interview with Vzlyot magazine, the general designer of UEC-Aviadvigatel spoke on the near term work plans for this promising turbofan engine.

“In the coming years, we will make a demonstrator engine and test it to understand where we are, how difficult and how long it will be fine-tuned. We will do it no matter what the circumstances. I think that in 2024 we will test it,” said Alexander Inozemtsev.

Also, according to him, the reconstruction of the PD-35 test bench will begin at the testing station in Froli. “We will build a temporary open stand there to test the main characteristics of the PD-35 demonstrator engine. And then, depending on the result, we will plan further fine-tuning. We will involve private small high-tech enterprises in this work. And, I hope, by the end of 2024 it will become clear to us how close we are to the necessary characteristics”, said Alexander Inozemtsev.

He noted that the PD-35 gas generator had already been tested , and the convergence of experimental and calculated data turned out to be much higher than that of the first PD-14 gas generator at one time. The characteristics obtained are very close to the design values, and UEC-Aviadvigatel hopes that the engine as a whole will show characteristics close to those that will ensure its competitiveness in the long-haul aviation market.

“We are still looking for sources of funding, since part of the money allocated for PD-35 is now being redistributed to other priority tasks. And this is right - it is necessary to clearly prioritize, it will not work to do everything at the same time”, the general designer explained.

Further work will depend on the development of the SFDMS CR929 program. “... either cooperation with Chinese partners will continue, or it will be decided to modernize and remotorize the domestic Il-96-400, or some other option will appear. But for the time being, this is not so critical for us - it is now very important for us to master the technology and understand where we are, what we really managed to achieve, because such large engines have never been produced in either the Soviet Union or Russia”, concluded Alexander Inozemtsev.

It looks like the Russian government decided to increase funding to UEC so they can fund the expansion of their facilities to mass produce the PD-14 and PD-8 engines. There was also an explicit order to continue production of the PD-35 engine prototype by 2024. I think this means PD-35 funds will not be diverted to other projects like was hinted at in the previous article. However the article says nothing about funds for the test campaign for the PD-35. I do not know if Gromov Flight Research Institute's Il-76LL flying engine test aircraft will be able to accommodate PD-35 engine tests. If the Il-76 cannot do the engine tests then they might need to modify an An-124 or Boeing 747 to do those tests I think. Both of those aircraft are available in Russia.

UEC will receive 44 billion rubles to expand the production of aircraft engines​

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree on expanding state support for projects for the production and production of aircraft engines for the entire line of domestic civil and military transport aircraft, according to the website of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The subsidy program includes projects to expand the production of engines PD-14 (for MS-21 aircraft), PS-90A (for medium-haul Tu-214 and military transport Il-76MD-90A), PD-8 (for SSJ-New and Be-200), TV-7117ST-01 (for Il-114-300). For these purposes, the UEC will allocate about 44 billion rubles.

It is planned to ensure the production of about fifty PD-8 engines, as well as twenty PS-90A and fourteen PD-14 engines within two years.

At the same time, research work on the creation of a high-thrust engine PD-35 should be carried out. It is planned to complete the development and creation of a prototype of this power plant by the end of 2024. Mikhail Mishustin instructed Deputy Prime Minister - Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov to personally supervise the implementation of this task.

According to the draft state budget for the next three years, the financing of the state program for the development of the aviation industry in 2023 will amount to 38.5 billion rubles, in 2024 - 41.5 billion rubles, in 2025 - 39.2 billion rubles. In particular, 885 million rubles were allocated to support engine building enterprises. annually.

The government of the Russian Federation allocates almost 900 million rubles for the creation of a long-range wide-body aircraft (SHFDMS). This is stated the Cabinet's release, published on the official portal for legal information.

“To provide in 2023 from the federal budget budget investments to the public joint-stock company United Aircraft Corporation in the amount of 896,868.9 thousand rubles in order to financially support the costs as part of the project to create a wide-body long-range aircraft,” the document says.

Budget investments in full will be made to the authorized capital of PJSC Scientific and Production Corporation Irkut. Financing of the SFDMS project is expected within the framework of the state program of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation. At the same time, for 2024 and 2025, the corresponding spending in it was not laid down.

Currently, the civil aviation of the Russian Federation does not have domestic SFDMS for commercial passenger transportation. At the VASO enterprise in Voronezh, piece-by-piece assembly of Il-96-300 aircraft for a special customer is underway. At the same time, Russia continues to jointly develop the CR929 long-range wide-body aircraft with the People's Republic of China. Due to the restrictions that were imposed on the Russian aviation industry, as well as the unwillingness of the Chinese side to abandon Western components and assemblies as much as possible in favor of their own production in Russia and China, the project was on the verge of being shut down.

In September, at the World Design Capital 2022 conference in Shanghai, Wu Guanghui, Chief Scientist of the Commercial Aviation Corporation of China (COMAC) , announced that the preliminary design of the CR929 aircraft had begun. In fact, this means that the development of the liner began almost anew with the maximum possible import substitution.
