The cognitive dissonance is astounding.

To give itself an air of credibility, the NYT article readily admits China's early success in managing the pandemic saved lives.

Then it attacks an hyper-vague strawman: "Unintended consequences" (Translation: Freedom to Die™ at your own volition)

There is no bigger consequence than literally DYING from a virus. Only through some warped mental gymnastics can NYT misconstrue "Virus Control" with "Not Saving Lives, but Killing People."

Basically, it's HYPER condescending, as it insinuates the Chinese people are incapable of governing ourselves and the Chinese people LIVES do not matter. It's a lose-lose situation, I don't see how any dissent can say: "Well yea, let's learn from the Western strategy of overwhelming hospitals and letting variants mutate" is better than 'zero COVID'. They can't even mention US superior economic growth because even CHINA beat them on the GDP economy metric.

If NYT reported this occurring in China, it would look like:

NYT Breaking news: In the latest authoritarian and draconian measure, Chinese Army has been deployed to staff Chinese civilian hospitals as COVID-19 SURGES into record breaking numbers. Is this a new beginning of Martial Law in China? At what Cost?
