Does anyone know how the Y9 compares to its counterpart C130? It seems like the Y9 has a longer and wider cargo hold but has less height. Does that affect its ability to carry armored vehicles? Or is it even designed to carry armored vehicles?

  1. AN12 Cub basis of the Y8 cargo hold length 13.5m, hight 3.5m width 2.6m. Max payload ~20metric ton
  2. C130H cargo hold length 12.19m, hight 2.74m Width 3.02m. Max payload ~19 Metric ton
  3. Y9 cargo hold 16.2m long, 3.2m High ,2.35 Wide. Max payload ~25metric ton
  4. C130J-30 cargo hold 16.9 meters long, Hight 2.74m, width 3 max payload ~19.95 metric tons
    bonus
  5. Embraer C390 Millennium 18.5 long, 3 high, 3.4 wide Payload 26 metric
  6. Kawasaki C2 16 long, 4 high and 4 wide payload 37.6 metric
  7. Airbus A400M 17.71m long, 3.85m high, 4 wide max payload 37 Metric
So, I ignored the stock C130J as it’s just about the same as the Hotel model. Y9 Vs the Hotel longer shorter narrower but heavier load. Vs the J30 shorter, taller narrower still heavier loads.
On armored vehicles? Slightly better. 26 tonnes is still fairly light for an armored vehicle. It it was a small vehicle than better protected than a larger but neither is really bringing anything really great. The size constraints of the hold also major as a factor those restrictions basically killed transport of Stryker by C130 these days, and have forced C17 to be the universal lifter of the USAF.
You have to move up in class to one of new generation of transports to make more use of the modern medium armored vehicle class.

I'm not sure if this list is correct. Is the cargo width of Y9 really narrower than AN12/Y8?

I sourced from global security, military today and our own old mother site.

I am only listing the internal cargo hold dimensions and max payload. Not the external dimensions. The difference between the two can by any number of factors including narrowing of the fuselage to reduce drag or alternatively reinforcing of the fuselage, pressure vessels. at what point the measurements came from, Additional systems or fuel tanks eve the addition of mounted jump seats. The physical difference is actually less than 10 inches. Which is what you would expect for an internal pressure hull. The stock AN12 was not pressurized. The Y8 was later modified to have pressurized models. Y9 likely started out based off this.

I'm sure this has been addressed many times already in this thread, but do we have a good sense for how many Y20s are operational right now?

says there are 7, but I'm guessing their data is a little bit outdated or incomplete. Same question for tankers. I've seen articles here and there say that China has about 20 operational tankers, most of them being H6 variants.

There is no official account but based on the number of imported engine we can make an intelligent guess

Via Weasel_1962 Not exactly chinese engine but it bear relation as to the status of WS20 Seem like no new order for DK30 since 2016. Interesting it give us some idea how many Y20 are produced sofar 30-40 but there are engine available until it reach 45. And planned H-6K production is around 120 wow probably mixed H-6K, H-6J, H-6N

2009 - 55 D30 for 20 H-6K (weasel's note: ties with Sipri reporting which indicated this may also be for Il-76)

2011 - 184 D30 for 5 Y-20, 80 H-6K ((weasel's note: Sipri also indicated for Il-76, tiananmenwordpress indicated 41 used for IL-76)
2016 - 170 D30 for 40 Y-20 (Not reported by Sipri)
2016 - 54 D30 for 20 H-6K (Not reported by Sipri)
Total 463 D30 imported

Noted the 2016 contracts were cited by BMPD as for Il76 & Y-20s.

30 to 40 Y20 estimate is correct based on Google Earth satellite photos taken in late 2018, late 2019 and early 2020.

2020 March 17th, GE satellite photo shows 18 Y20 in the Xi An factory. And hidden from view, there were more in the hangars at the assembly lines and paint shop.
