U.S. and Canadian warships carry out Taiwan Strait transit

Cooperation is centerpiece of approach to the region, U.S. Navy says.

(Reuters) -- A U.S. Navy warship and a Canadian frigate carried out a routine transit of the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, the U.S. military said.

In recent years, U.S. warships, and on occasion those from allied nations such as Britain and Canada, have routinely sailed through the strait, drawing the ire of China, which claims Taiwan over the objections of the island's democratically elected government.

In a statement, the U.S. Navy said its Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy's Halifax-class frigate Vancouver conducted the transit through a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state.

"Cooperation like this represents the centerpiece of our approach to a secure and prosperous region," the Navy statement added.

A visit to Taiwan by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in early August enraged China, which regards the island as its territory.

China subsequently launched military drills near the island, which have continued.

(Mt.Kailash) in return for officially recognising Aksai Chin as part of PRC, Wouldn't hurt to have two countries fighting for your favour in South Asia
Absolutely not. Jai Hinds will bite your leg off if you show any weakness.

China should bring both of them for a weekend stay at Xinjiang. The grape wines there are fantastic, and also the scenery will be great for their weary eyes.

Then extract a binding commitment to mutually respective each other's sovereign integrity, as failure of which will lead to total economic decoupling.

What are you going to do about South Tibet/arunachal Pradesh? Aksai chin is an empty Region of little value. China can trade a mountain there for peace. But China can't give up its claim on South Tibet, which is actually inhabitable and of historical significance. Maybe, China could allow India to have the majority of the area as long as Tawang town is returned to China.

If there was a border treaty, India would be free to engage in more hostile behaviour. The existence of the border dispute is useful to put pressure on India. Every time they do something stupid, they lose another mountain at the border

Just another result of double deployments. The US Navy doesn't have enough ships for the US Govt's maximalist world domination goals. The result is subs running into sea mounts, destroyers colliding with commercial ships, coast guard in the West Pacific, having 3-4 carriers undeployable, low enlistment, rusty ships, early retirements... They are literally wearing their navy out.
