I have read elsewhere that if there is a boycott, it will be most likely that the boycotting countries won't send their politicians over but the athletes and fans would still go.
Best news I gave heard if this is true.

Who even wants politicians on the Olympics? Just let the athletes compete and have the 80 yrs old politicians stay in their nursing homes

George W. Bush went to the 2008 Olympics with his whole family and it was a big deal back then.

Well, back in 2008, China wanted the spotlight that Summer Olympics affords; today China's goal is much purer. It's about winter sports and hosting WO can promote them in China. China has invested a lot in winter sports facilities in the last decade or so. China couldn't care less about having these western officials attending or not.

Yep. The "normal" Olympics which the whole world watches and that the host nation projects its image globally is on Summer.

The winter Olympics have a much smaller viewership. Now of cource it is still the Olympics and so the country will need to show its image to the world but is not as much of a deal as the Summer Olympics.

IMO, the Olympics should go back to the 4 year period again. Having Olympics all the time devalues the event and it also forces the organisation committee to dupe countries and cities around the world in bankrupting themselves for hosting it...
