"Xinjiang region, where the Chinese government has waged a broad campaign of repression against ethnic minorities." Shoppers vowed to

the brands. Celebrities dropped their endorsement deals.

The author of the article who happens to be of Chinese descent is unfortunately pushing the Evil CCP narrative regarding the Uyghur situation in Xinjiang. And the above paragraph or sentence was written as a matter of fact rather than typing it down as "alleged repression" since there's no actual evidence to prove this idiot's baseless allegations. What a sad monster to be writing such a blatant lie.
Mind you, had she not inserted this propagandist line, her article would quite possibly not be published in the New York Times!

The fact that the New York Times or any other major MSM will publish some article on China nowadays means it should have embedded some toxic narrative inside, even just in the form of a casual passage, and most readers won't realize that.

Mm, the article was balanced for a New York Times article. No raging diatribe against the Chinese government. At least it shows the Chinese are selective consumers. You gotta be a high or middle high income economy to do that. Not something Indians or Brazilians can do!

Calling for a boycott is the typical tactic they throw out there thinking China will panic and submit. Not saying they won't. Just saying they're going to wait until the last minute they can. This early it's a lot smoke but no fire. They're going to taunt a lot until the Winter Olympics. You think they want to lose the taunting already when the have almost a year making themselves think like how important it is for them to be there to Chinese? I don't think China should've bothered because it only gives the West the opportunity to do what they're doing right now.
Moreover, at the current state of the world, I mean the Geopolitics situation, if some countries are ganging up to boycott the Winter OLYMPIC, China just makes sure that each participant of such boycott will pay a price somehow.

But thing is already ugly enough at present, so what to be worry? So just let them boycott and make sure they pay the cost for boycotting. China should fear not. Just remember each key actor that gets involved in such action and hits back where they will feel the pain. Just like H&M, Nike, the Essex Court, and so forth.

It said 83 percent viewed China as a national security threat while only 12 percent said the country is a partner on security affairs.

Meanwhile, 60 percent of those polled called China an economic threat as opposed to 37 percent who said China is an economic partner.
Note that this was made by a US think-tank however I dont think it is false.

While unlikely that China will be boycotted successfully, there still runs a risk. Countries that can afford to participate in the Winter Olympics are rich Western nations, plus CJK. If the gamut of Western nations somehow, somehow manages to run a coordinated cooperation finally, then the Winter Olympics might as well not happen. The rest of the world, such as the Muslim world and Latin American world, doesn't really participate much in the Winter Olympics because of the lack of winter conditions and lack of financial resources. And these are the countries that wouldn't boycott based on a fraudulent lie and would also support China internationally.

The Winter Olympics is a club for rich Western nations.

This is the main reason why the US is starting shit around the world- in Ukraine and in Asia- it's because they need the world to buy USD Treasuries as a safe haven and the USG needs that money to fund their infrastructure plan.

Maybe loyal vassals like the Japanese are buying US Treasuries, but i'd be surprised if the PBOC is doing the same level of buying as before.

@windsclouds2030 @Crang @hashtagpls @voyager1 if the Olympic boycott do happen, nobody in his/her right mind is willing to host any expensive Olympic event only to be subjected to such embarrassment.
It would only hurt themselves. I mean it would be the US and a dozen or so of its slaves.

The world is bigger than these racist countries so they would only embarrass themselves
