USS Bonhomme Richard may not be salvageable and would be one of the BIGGEST ships ever lost by the Navy

14 Jul 2020, 15:39

The $761million ship was at the tail end of a $250million upgrade, according to Stars and Stripes. While Navy officials said they are hopeful it will sail again, extensive damage like a collapsed forward mast and damage to the ship's superstructure that rises above its flight deck suggest otherwise.

"The heat of a fire of this nature can warp the steel, and that can be a major problem for any ship," he said. "On an older ship, it's even more of a problem."

Brennan suspects there could be significant internal damage.

If the ship can not be salvaged, it will be one of the biggest losses - in terms of the ship's size and weight - in Navy history.

Even if it can be saved, the ship will likely be out of commission for an extended period of time to undergo what could be extremely extensive repairs.

Looks like write off.

I notice the staunch defenders of Israel in the US always try to divert any criticism of Israel in the US onto another country usually China. If you don't read about the goings on in the media world, this Bari Weiss has been controversial. She's one of those tries to comes across as a liberal but when it comes to Israel, the Mr. Hyde comes out. I've seen her flippantly try to divert attention away from any criticism of Israel and onto China when China has nothing to do with what's being criticized of Israel. It's not like something Israel is being wrongfully accused and China is actually at fault. Does China have a history of anti-Semitism? No. They want people to care about the plight of the Jewish people yet don't care if they offend a rising China. I find it ironic that they would want to cause more people to hate. These are same that are also afraid of China's rise and are usually writing anti-China articles in the media. Why so much antagonism against China that has no history of anti-Semitism? The irony is it's because China doesn't have a history of anti-Semitism. China has no obligations to care about their interests. Yeah they'll point to how China has relations with countries in the Middle East but then the US also has relations with countries in the Middle East. The difference is they have spent time lobbying the US to make sure Americans are concerned over their interests. They see a rising China where they have no influence and it troubles them. They're worried not because China is guilty of a crime that has happened. They're worried about the uncertainty of the future. It's not crime when it hasn't happened. Another irony is they want anti-China action now. They're guilty now of the very thing they're worried China might do to them in the future. Same with Marco Rubio. Do you think this guy cares about human rights in China when right-wing Cubans were behind some nasty actions over Cuba? He hates China because China don't give a crap nor is obligated to care about what Cuban-Americans wants. So don't believe how some have pointed to why so many countries hate China. It's more about how they've put all their bets on the US thinking US power over the world was forever. It's not just these two. It's anyone that considers the US their ally. Now they see a rising China is threatening their interests and more importantly their interpretation of the world and they don't want to have to earn China's favor after they've invested so much into the US already. Of course they're for the US to act against China because they don't want to have earn it from China.

Does China have a history of anti-Semitism? No.

If the Israeli lobbies continue with this nonsense and it leads to military action, I can see the opposite from happening. AFAIK, the Palestinians have yet to capitalize on this anti-China movement to their advantage. Or maybe they have but were unsuccessful.

Spent time lobbying or blackmailing. See Epstein / Maxwell for details. As we approach October when the UN sanctions are set to expire, expect the rhetoric against China to rise to an all time high. I doubt the Chinese, or the Russians, would agree to extend the sanctions. And once it's expired, the Sino-Iranian agreement might even get signed. Expect more attempts to start proxy wars. Already we're seeing a border conflict brewing between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Same with Marco Rubio.

Regarding Latin America, just follow the money. It has nothing to do with the well-being of every day Latinos. There are a bunch of wealthy people living in Weston, Florida that have lobbied Washington DC for action in places like Cuba and Venezuela. Their front man, Guaidó, tried unsuccessfully to lobby China to abandon Maduro.

The hackers who controlled the accounts posted fake tweets urging Twitter users to send money to a number of bitcoin wallets, promising that users would be paid back double. Instead, the hackers appeared to simply take the money and run — with more than $116,000 flowing into the wallets by Thursday morning. All bitcoin transactions are visible on a public ledger, making the hack an even greater spectacle.

Those wallets will be forever radioactive as law enforcement eyes them for withdrawals or transfers that could be traced back to the original attackers, said Kenn White, a security principal at the software database company MongoDB.

"Those [bitcoin] addresses will be scrutinized closer than any in history," he said.

For such a disruptive hack, the money involved pales in comparison to the kind of million-dollar payouts hackers can routinely expect from other types of financially motivated attacks. In addition to being relatively small in financial terms, the profits from this week's Twitter attack are insignificant in light of how deeply the hackers appear to have penetrated Twitter's systems.

"If you've stolen a Ferrari, why just drive around the block?" White said.
But some security experts are bracing for the worst. By using the hijacked accounts to push a bitcoin scam, the attackers publicly advertised their successful attack — guaranteeing that Twitter would swiftly respond and lock them out, said Theresa Payton, the former White House chief information officer under President George W. Bush.

While that could indicate nothing more than a play for notoriety and a quick cash grab, she said, the hackers could have downloaded information about the accounts for later release — potentially including private messages, photos, phone numbers and email addresses. That would be damaging enough at any time, but during a critical election year in which trust in platforms and their handling of information remain key concerns, the stakes could not be higher.

"Are they going to come back later with a 'dump and dox' campaign or a blackmail situation?" said Payton. "We only know about the accounts they flipped with that message. How about all the other accounts they didn't flip with that message?"
